ATV’s a no-go, ATV club in the works

SOUTHWEST MIDDLESEX - The use of off-road vehicles (ORVs) on township roads has been outlawed. Council passed a by-law during a Wednesday, 10 March 2021 meeting to prohibit the recreational use of ATVs, dirtbikes, side-by-sides, snowmobiles, and the like on local roads for recreational purposes. In January, the Ontario government downloaded control over ORV use on roads to municipalities. The legislative change came as a surprise to municipalities, and many have passed similar by-laws. It’

“When we have complaints, the first person I call is the head of that group,” he explains. He admits that there are still issues with trespassing, as there always was, but says those bad actors aren’t typically club members. Keldey McConnell, a founder of the Dutton group, was approached by someone in Southwest Middlesex for help starting a club. He says talks have just barely begun.

“The municipality has to decide first how they want to approach this,” he explained. Southwest Middlesex staff have been directed to meet with the local riders to carry on discussions. In the meantime, the by-law prohibiting rec use will protect Southwest Middlesex from a liability standpoint.
