Atrium Health names new board chairwoman, first woman of color for position

Atrium Health has named a new hospital system board chairwoman, marking the first time the Board of Commissioners has been led by a woman of color.

Angie Vincent-Hamacher will lead the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Hospital Authority Board of Commissioners, effective immediately, Atrium announced Tuesday.

Board members voted on the nomination in the board’s quarterly meeting Tuesday.

Vincent-Hamacher, an attorney with Robinson Bradshaw, has been a member of the CMHA board since 2014. In that time, she has served in several roles on the board including vice chairwoman and chairwoman of the Quality and Equity of Care Committee, according to Atrium, which is Charlotte’s largest hospital system.

“I believe it is our shared responsibility to help those in need and give back to our community,” Vincent-Hamacher said in a statement. “… With our ‘for all’ mission, we have a unique opportunity to continue to reshape the landscape of access to care and equity of care for people in rural and underserved areas, as well as for people of color.”

Vincent-Hamacher replaces Edward J. Brown III, who led the board since 2013.

“As Angie takes the gavel, it is significant to mention that beyond her immense qualifications, her selection to lead our board represents the types of opportunity Atrium Health stands for, becoming the first woman and the first person of color to chair the Board of Commissioners,” Brown said in a statement Tuesday.

Brown will remain part of the CMHA board and will continue his role as the chairman of the Atrium Health Inc board of directors, which includes Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist.

The announcement comes as Atrium continues to unveil details on its plans for a four-year medical school — Charlotte’s first.

In recent weeks, Atrium Health has detailed plans for a $1.5 billion “innovation district” surrounding that medical school, including requests for $75 million in tax increment grants and capital funds from the county and city.

Construction on Atrium Health’s medical school is expected to begin by early 2022.
