Supermarket chain Asda said it plans to hire around 15,000 temporary employees, with more than 1000 of the jobs being delivery driver roles.

The search for staff is slightly higher than the company would typically look for at this time of year.

A number of retailers are anticipating strong Christmas trading as customers look to make up for the period last year when lockdown restrictions were in place. Firms are also competing for staff amid driver shortages.

Asda, which was sold this year to the Issa brothers and private equity firm TDR Capital, said the seasonal jobs will also cover in store roles, picking and packing online orders, and other roles.

The grocer said there will be opportunities for some of the staff to remain with the firm into the New Year to cover permanent employees who take holidays after the busy Christmas period.

Since the start of the Covid-19 crisis, Asda has more than doubled the capacity of its online delivery service and will have 900,000 home delivery and click and collect slots available the week before Christmas.

Hayley Tatum, chief people officer at Asda, said: “We will do all we can to make sure customers have a fantastic Christmas and recruiting an extra 15,000 colleagues across our stores, depots and home delivery service will help us to provide them with great products and excellent service when they shop with us during the festive season.”
