Workday to cut 1,750 jobs in AI push
Workday CEO Carl Eschenbach said the layoffs are necessary to prioritize investments such as artificial intelligence, while also freeing up resources to expand the company's presence in different countries. The layoffs come at a time when the human capital management industry has grappled with slower spending by enterprise clients as high interest rates have pressured tech budgets. Workday expects to incur around $230 million to $270 million in charges connected to the cost reduction plan, of which, around $60 million to $70 million is expected to be recognized in the fourth quarter.

Nasdaq futures stumble on bleak Alphabet, AMD forecasts
Google-parent Alphabet dropped 7.1% in premarket trading after posting downbeat cloud revenue growth and earmarking a higher-than-expected $75 billion for its AI buildout this year, fanning concerns about its hefty investments into the technology. "While some investors may have hoped that Silicon Valley would exercise caution in the wake of China's AI innovations, the opposite is occurring," Jochen Stanzl, chief market analyst at CMC Markets, said in a mailed statement. All three major Wall Street indexes closed higher on Tuesday, with energy shares outperforming, while an earnings-driven jump in Palantir boosted technology shares.

'He got away with murder': Families of Nottingham attack victims react to review into killer
The families of the Nottingham victims have said the attacker "got away with murder" after an independent review found failings involved in his prior NHS care. Valdo Calocane was allowed to avoid taking long-lasting antipsychotic medication because he did not like needles, the 300-page report found. Calocane, who had been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after killing 19-year-old students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, and 65-year-old caretaker Ian Coates, before attempting to kill three other people in June 2023.

Melexis forecasts lower sales and margin for 1st half of 2025, shares slump
Melexis, Belgium's largest semiconductor supplier, on Wednesday forecast lower margin and sales for the first half of 2025, sending its shares to nearly five-year lows, as inventory corrections by automotive clients continue into the new year. Melexis, whose automotive semiconductor business made up 90% of its total sales in 2024, counts Tesla and Chinese carmakers BYD and NIO among its customers. European and North American customers pushed back some orders during the fourth quarter to cut down high inventories, CEO Marc Biron said during a post-earnings call, adding there had been no such moves from Chinese automakers.

Women prisoners banned from putting dirty underwear in washing machines as lack of 'basic care' driving self-harm, inspectors say
Female prisons have a self-harm rate 8.5 times higher than male jails, as women experience a lack of "basic care" - including a "bizarre rule" that bans them from putting dirty underwear in washing machines. In a report published following a review of four female jails, chief prisons inspector Charlie Taylor said this lack of "basic care" is causing such distress that inmates are resorting to harming themselves. None of the prisons allowed women to wash their dirty underwear in a machine - instead they had to wash it by hand in a small bowl in their cell.
