Apple Watch Series 4 Detects Falls and Gives Electrocardiograms

It's a total revamp from the Series 3.

It's no secret that every time a new iPhone gets announced, Apple's other devices often fall into its shadow. But with some major upgrades and exciting new features, the Series 4 Apple Watch may be poised to steal a little bit of the iPhone XS's thunder. Last year when the Series 3 introduced wireless service, we were impressed. But this year, Apple's new Watch innovations prove that they're taking the world's most popular watch to a completely new level.

Though it retains many of the features that Watch users love most about their wrist companions, the Series 4 is basically a total overhaul from earlier versions of Apple's Watch. With a bigger display, even the cases of the watch are different sizes, moving from the Series 3's 38mm and 42mm sizes to 40mm and 44mm. The larger display also allows for bigger text and icons as well as increased capability to view images on your watch. It also comes with new, customizable faces that let you do things like store your bff's picture on your home screen—and then call them with just a touch of your finger. And

Apple's new tech also comes with fall detection. As shown on screen during the keynote, engineers analyzed the different type of movements associated with falls, slips, and trips, and the Series 4's improved gyroscope and accelerometer can now detect falls and give you quick access to emergency services.

The most exciting updates, though, surely are what Apple is doing with heart health.

The Series 4 watch can now give users an electrocardiogram (ECG)—something which, up 'til now, has never been available over the counter and direct to consumers. The ECG takes only 30 seconds and then the data lives in a PDF in users' health app, whether you have a normal heart rhythm or show signs of atrial fibrillation. Users will also be notified if they show signs of atrial fibrillation thanks to the watch's intermittent heart rate analysis.

The Series 4 starts at $399 for the version with just GPS and $499 for the version with wireless. Preorders start September 14, with watches shipping September 21.
