How does Apple Pay work? Here's how to use it in a few quick steps.

Technology is rapidly changing the way we function in the world, including the way we buy things. Apple Payunveiled in 2014, has taken off in the past few years and is now the top mobile payment app in the U.S., according to an eMarketer analysis.

Contactless pay became a consumer favorite during the pandemic with contact-related health concerns, giving rise to card readers that accept Apple Pay. Apple announced a new Tap to Pay feature in February 2022 that allows users to make store purchases by tapping another iPhone.

How to Apple Pay at the store

  1. Double click the side button on your iPhone

  2. Use Face ID or enter your passcode to confirm your identity, or use your fingerprint on a Touch ID iPhone

  3. Hold iPhone near the card reader and make a payment

How to set up Apple Pay

  1. Make sure you’re signed in with your Apple ID

  2. Open the Wallet app

  3. Tap the plus sign in the top right corner to add a new card

  4. Use the camera to scan your debit or credit card, or enter the card information manually

Once your card is verified, you can add it to your Apple Watch or other devices. To set up Apple Pay on your Apple Watch, bring your phone and watch close together. Open the Apple Watch app, and scroll down to select “Wallet & Apple Pay.” Your added cards should automatically appear. Click the “Add” button to the right of the card, and you will be prompted to verify your card once again.

To pay with Apple Watch, double click the side button and your card will appear. Touch the screen of your watch near the card reader.

Where can I use Apple Pay?

Apple Pay can be used at over 85% of retail locations in the U.S., Apple says. Any location with contactless payment options is a go. Accepting machines will have the contactless payment symbol (a hand tapping an oval with four curved lines) or the Apple Pay logo in a rectangular box.

Can I use Apple Pay online?

You can also use your Apple Pay online. If Apple Pay is an option, you’ll see it indicated on your checkout screen. Simply tap “Buy with Apple Pay,” and confirm the payment using your Face ID, passcode, Touch ID or by double clicking the side button on your Apple Watch.
