Apple is about to hold one of its major events – titled “Spring Loaded” – in which it is expected to reveal a host of new products.
Rumours suggest there will be new iPads, Macs, accessories and more.
Here’s everything that is rumoured to be coming at the event, which will be held on 20 April, and broadcast live online.
iPad Pro
The most certain rumours seems to be a new update to the iPad Pro, ready for 2021. The premium tablet is now lagging somewhat behind its iPad Air sibling – which has a better processor, though lacks some of the Pro’s features – and the new update is rumoured to put it back on top with improved performance and other features.
As well as improved specs, at least one version of the iPad will include miniLED display technology aimed at better contrast, colours and brightness.
One of the strong rumours about this device – or the bigger, 12.9-inch model – suggests that production problems with the new display technology mean it could be hard to buy at launch. That could mean that it is in short supply, or that Apple might delay the full release as it did with some of the iPhones last year.
There may be other iPads too, such as a Mini and the cheaper iPad that is known only by that name. They are not expected to undergo any external design updates, but instead receive speed and performance upgrades.
iMac
The iMac is also expected to get a significant upgrade. It will be the next computer to get an Apple Silicon chip – the technology that first arrived with the MacBook Air, Pro and Mac Mini last year – though it is still not clear whether that will be a whole new processor or the same M1 that already powers those.
The introduction of Apple Silicon would be about the least shocking announcement Apple could make. When it announced the transition, last year, it said that it would fully switch over within two years, and the iMac seems like the inevitable next update; if it doesn’t come during this event, it will come soon after.
The M1 computers that have already been released also look identical, from the outside, to their predecessors. That could be different with the iMac: rumours suggest that the new computer will include smaller bezels around the display, have design language more akin to the squared sides that first arrived with the iPad Pro and have made their way to the iPhone, and come in different sizes.
AirTags
Perhaps the most rumoured Apple device that is yet to launch, the AirTags have been the subject of speculation for at least two years. Apple continues to accidentally reveal details about them, but they have not had their official launch.
That could change at the upcoming event. The product – rumoured to be a small disc that could be stuck to bags or keys so they can be tracked with a phone – could finally go on sale.
iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands
It’s almost definite that we won’t get any new phone or watch updates, given new ones both came out towards the end of last year. But they’ll get updates: new spring colours of both cases and bands are released each year, and there is no reason to think that won’t happen again this time around.
Apple TV
There are no strong rumours to suggest that a new Apple TV is on its way – but it has not been updated for so long that it is long overdue. Bloomberg reports indicated that the company was working on a whole new version with a speaker and camera built into it, but any update that does arrive at the spring event is likely to be more modest, with a processor and perhaps storage update.
Also within the smart home, Apple could say something about the HomePod, which was discontinued in recent weeks, with the excuse of focusing on the HomePod Mini. But it may also opt to leave that in the past.
