Apparently, Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice Has A Ridiculously Low Chance Of Being Profitable

Over the last few days speculation regarding ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ has teased that Warner Bros. are a little nervous about the blockbuster.

A Hit-Fix rumour has it that the studio are worried ‘Dawn Of Justice’ will prove to be critically divisive, just like its predecessor ‘Man Of Steel’. Which is something they are concerned about because they were hoping that it would be universally popular like ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.

Because of this, Warner Bros. are worried that ‘Batman v Superman,’ which they’ve spent anywhere between $200 million and $400 million on, won’t quite fare as well as they were expecting at the box office.

And now, according to the Daily Mail, a new algorithm has predicted that ‘Batman v Superman’ actually only has a 32% chance of making a profit at the box office. How did they work this out? Well, they used learning software to analyse over 2,500 previous releases between 2000 and 2010.

In order to gather their results computer scientists and researchers, whose work was published by the journal of Social Computing, Behavioural-Cultural Modelling and Prediction, looked at the traits that played the most part in a film’s success.

These factors included the cast, the director, genre, plot, and the time of the year that it was released. Their study figured out that the most common reasons for a film’s success was the relationship between a director and the cast, especially if they had an extensive history of making profitable films together.

They also found that the average gross of a director’s previous movies, a cast of actors that have had box office success, a high annual profit percentage of the genre, and a winter release date all made financial success more attainable.

However, Warner Bros. shouldn’t take this algorithm too seriously. That’s because Ben Affleck and Zack Snyder have never worked together before, and Henry Cavill only recently shot to international stardom because of his work in the original.

While, the fact that ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ is bringing together two of the most iconic characters in the history of any medium will probably be enough to paper over the other cracks too.

We’ll see if that’s the case soon after ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice’ is finally released on March 25.
