CFPB sues Comerica Bank over allegations of failing disabled and older Americans
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said it was suing Comerica for failing 3.4 million "Direct Express" card holders -- who the agency said were primarily unbanked people receiving federal benefits -- by deliberately disconnecting their phone calls and charging them illegal fees. In doing so, "Comerica boosted its bottom line at the expense of Americans living on a fixed income," Rohit Chopra, the agency's director, said in a statement. However, the Dallas-based lender said it had sued the CFPB in federal court last month, claiming the agency had overstepped its legal authority in the investigation after Comerica attempted to clarify matters.

S&P 500, Nasdaq gain after jobs data boosts December rate-cut bets
The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq hit intraday record highs on Friday as traders increased bets on a Federal Reserve rate cut this month following robust November nonfarm payrolls data, while a drop in UnitedHealth shares weighed on the Dow. U.S. job growth surged in November after being severely hindered by hurricanes and strikes, but a rise in the unemployment rate to 4.2% pointed to an easing labor market, which should allow the Fed room to cut interest rates again this month. Traders boosted bets the U.S. Federal Reserve would cut interest rates this month, now signaling a more than 90% chance of a 25-basis-point rate cut at the central bank's Dec. 17-18 meeting, versus 67% before the jobs data was released.

Arne Slot urges Liverpool to be ‘aggressive in a smart way’ against Everton
Arne Slot wants Liverpool to be “aggressive in a smart way” in the Merseyside derby as he feels his side receive more yellow cards than they deserve. The Reds boss will be without midfielder Alexis Mac Allister against Everton on Saturday as he serves a one-match ban after his fifth booking of the season in Wednesday’s draw at Newcastle. Ryan Gravenberch is also only one caution away from being suspended and, in the heat of what is likely to be the final derby at Goodison Park, barring an FA Cup meeting, Slot is aware tensions can sometimes boil over.

Two US senators seek antitrust probe of DraftKings, FanDuel
Two U.S senators have asked the Federal Trade Commission and Justice Department to investigate online betting platforms DraftKings and FanDuel over concerns they are coordinating against competitors. In a letter dated Dec. 5, Republican Senator Mike Lee and Democratic Senator Peter Welch asked for an investigation following reports that the two companies were allegedly acting together to pressure businesses not to engage with competitors. "After their merger to monopoly was blocked, it seems that FanDuel and DraftKings have arguably acted as one company, violating our antitrust laws," they wrote, citing the companies' failed 2016 plan to combine.

Fed's Hammack says time to slow rate cuts may have arrived
In her first major policy speech, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland President Beth Hammack said on Friday she’s keeping her options open when it comes to the central bank’s next policy meeting, as broader economic conditions continue to argue for a slowdown in the pace of rate cuts. “I believe we are at or near the point where it makes sense to slow the pace of rate reductions,” Hammack said in the text of a speech prepared for delivery before The City Club of Cleveland. As for what will happen at the Federal Open Market Committee meeting scheduled for Dec. 17-18, Hammack said that more data is coming between now and then, noting she “will maintain an open mind” about how to set the federal funds rate, which is currently set between 4.5% and 4.75%.

Russia's 'hybrid attack' on Romanian election could trigger NATO response if proven
Any evidence that Russia tried to influence an election in a NATO state would expose a form of hybrid attack that is designed to weaken the alliance from within. It is why events in Romania - where a top court has just annulled the result of the first round of voting in a presidential election amid concerns about an interference operation conducted from overseas - will surely be ringing alarm bells across NATO capitals.
