Angelina Jolie wore a seriously sparkly caftan this weekend, and it's a major change for her

It seems impossible for Angelina Jolie to look anything less than, well, perfect. Even though she donned an Elie Saab Couture dress to the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Awards on February 17th that was outside of her usual sleek and understated box, Jolie stunned.

At the event, she was being honored for her work on her latest film, First They Killed My Father, and the Saab creation she wore to accept her award was sparkly, flowing, fairy-like, and a definite change of pace for Jolie — the perfect dress for a woman at the top of her creative game.

We’re used to seeing Jolie in simpler, more form-fitting gowns at red carpet events, but this isn’t the first time she’s switched things up. Jolie wore a similar Elie Saab gown to the 2014 Oscars from the designer’s fall/winter 2013 haute couture collection. That piece was also dripping in sequins and built from sheer material, but there’s something more ethereal about this latest Saab creation that makes Jolie look like she walked out of a fantasy film.

Perhaps this dress works so well for Jolie because of its nude color. The muted tones paired with shimmer help to mature the look.

The gown is certainly in stark contrast to the strapless black velvet number Jolie wore the next night, to the BAFTAs.

She’s looks like a fairy queen.

Take a look at her 2014 Oscars dress — another departure for the actress/director.

For a little contrast, here’s the Jolie-to-a-tee gown she wore to the BAFTAs this weekend.

On Saturday, Jolie was honored with the Board of Governors Award by the ASC for raising awareness about social and cultural issues with First They Killed My Father. She co-wrote the film with Loung Ung, the author of the book on which the film is based. Ung’s story is a retelling of her childhood spent as a child soldier in Cambodia.

The actress-turned-director does amazing work on and off the red carpet. We’re in love with what we see.
