Angelina Jolie Versus Brad Pitt at the Box Office: Who Wins?

By Pamela McClintock, The Hollywood Reporter

Combined, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s movies have grossed nearly $13 billion at the worldwide box office, a feat nearly no other Hollywood couple can claim.

But with Brangelina exiting the stage — Jolie has filed for divorce from Pitt — who is the bigger star between the two at the box office?

The answer is Pitt, whose 46 films have earned $6.95 billion at the worldwide box office, not adjusted for inflation, according to The Numbers. Jolie’s 36 movies have taken in $5.97 billion. That includes $2.7 billion domestically for Pitt and $2.2 billion domestically for Jolie.

“Pitt’s films have truly defined moments in pop culture history spanning and linking multiple decades. His box-office appeal as an actor, along with his cultural relevance, is current while Jolie has taken a backseat to writing and directing of late,” says box-office analyst Jeff Bock. “In fact, without Jolie’s Kung Fu Panda trilogy, it’s not even that close.”

The three animated Kung Fu Panda movies have grossed $2 billion globally, or a third of Jolie’s total box-office take.

For years, the top-grossing title for both actors was Mr. & Mrs. Smith, marking their big-screen debut together, as well as the start of their romance (they didn’t marry until 2014).

Mr. & Mrs Smith, released in summer 2005, earned $486 million worldwide. That narrowly bested Pitt’s previous best, Ocean’s Eleven, which earned $484.2 million in 2004. Almost 10 years later, World War Z became Pitt’s top-grossing title ($531.5 million).

Other Pitt highlights include 2009’s Inglourious Basterds ($316.9 million), 2008’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button ($329 million) and the 1995 cult classic Seven ($328 million). He’s had numerous other wins, both as an actor and a producer, including The Big Short and 12 Years a Slave. The latter two films are among a number of movies to earn Pitt Oscar attention as the founder of production company Plan B.

In 2014, Jolie’s Maleficent out-witched Mr. & Mrs. Smith with a stunning $758.8 million globally. The Disney live-action fairy tale underscored Jolie’s star power even while she made fewer movies in order to focus on directing and her humanitarian work.

Her other biggest live-action films in recent years include 2010’s Salt ($290 million) and 2008’s Wanted ($342.4 million).

The only other movie Pitt and Jolie have starred in together was the ill-fated By the Sea, which Jolie directed and wrote. By the Sea, released in November 2015, earned just $538,460 million in the U.S. The moody drama — about a couple coming apart — earned more overseas, or $2.9 million. Still, the dismal global total of $3.4 million makes By the Sea the lowest grossing film for either Jolie and Pitt since the early days of their careers.
