Samsung warns of slow AI chip sales in Q1, hurt by US restrictions on China
SEOUL (Reuters) -Samsung Electronics on Friday warned of sluggish sales of its artificial intelligence chips in the current quarter due to U.S. export restrictions to China, and as it worked towards launching an improved version of its high-end chips. Advanced chips used for AI have been the bright spot in the weak memory chip market, but rival SK Hynix is Nvidia's main supplier of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips used in AI graphics processing units (GPUs), whereas Samsung has struggled to meet Nvidia's requirements. The U.S. in December also launched a fresh crackdown on China's semiconductor industry, including restricting HBM chip sales.

Air Force deportation flight skirts Mexican airspace to Guatemala as military's border role grows
A U.S. Air Force jet with 80 migrants that left Texas for Guatemala on Thursday charted a path around Mexico because it couldn't fly over the country, according to a U.S. official. The Mexican government said it never denied permission. The flight from Fort Bliss, an Army base in El Paso, was scheduled to take about seven hours, nearly twice as long as a direct route, because the military plane could not fly over Mexico, said U.S. Border Patrol spokesperson Orlando Marrero.

There were 64 people on the plane that departed from Witchita in Kansas and three US soldiers in the helicopter when the aircraft collided just before 9pm local time on Wednesday. The crash, which happened as the jet sought to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport, is the worst civil aviation disaster in the US since 2001.

Senator questions military helicopter flights near civilian airplanes in DC
The top Democrat on the Senate Commerce Committee said Thursday the United States needs to reconsider the significant military helicopter flights near one of the most congested U.S. airports after a midair collision in Washington killed 67 people. "The big question I have is why do you have a military training flight so close to the route that people are supposed to land... Why is that corridor right on top of the (civilian) flight corridor?," said Senator Maria Cantwell in an interview. A 2021 report said there are about 11,000 military helicopter flights annually within 30 miles of Reagan National.
