Andrew Neil ‘in talks to host new politics show on Channel 4’

Andrew Neil could be set to host a new politics show on Channel 4, according to reports.

The veteran interviewer is in discussions to front a political analysis show on Sundays at 7pm, TV industry magazine Broadcast reported.

A morning slot is reportedly “off the cards” due to a reluctance to clash with BBC1’s Sunday Morning show and Sophy Ridge on Sky.

Neil, 72, is said to be looking for a prominent on-air role following his disastrous short-lived spell as a presenter on GB News.

“The early evening scheduling would enable Neil to provide analysis of the political appearances on rival shows earlier in the day, as well as featuring heavyweight guests,” Broadcast said.

He is said to be in advanced discussions with director of programmes Ian Katz and director of news and current affairs Louisa Compton over the proposals.

Neil announced his departure from GB News in September after relations between himself and the new channel soured.

He later revealed that he “came close to a breakdown” after suffering from stress due to the fledgling station’s technical problems.

The former BBC presenter added that GB News “unilaterally” cancelled his exit deal and he “couldn’t be happier” to have severed ties.

Speaking previously on Question Time, Neil said he had been in a “minority of one” over the future direction of GB News, which has been accused of trying to import Fox News-style journalism to the UK.

“More and more differences emerged between myself and the other senior managers and the board of GB News,” Neil said at the time.

A number of big names joined GB News for its launch including ITV News journalist Alastair Stewart BBC journalist Simon McCoy and former Labour MP Gloria De Piero.

The channel was embroiled in controversy after Guto Harri quit following a row over him taking the knee during a debate on the racism directed towards England football players.

Channel 4 has been contacted for comment.
