It seems the former Spider-Man Andrew Garfield has nothing but good things to say about his successor in the role, and the character’s new movie.

Garfield – recently nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Actor (Drama) category, for his lead role in Mel Gibson’s ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ – was asked by Entertainment Tonight for his thoughts on the recent trailer for ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming,’ the Sony/Marvel co-production with Tom Holland in the lead.

The 33-year old actor replied, “I watched it, it’s great! I think it looks great. I’m really excited to see it, I can’t wait. I’m a big fan of Tom, and of that character, so I’m just really excited to see it.”

Garfield took over from Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man with 2012’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man,’ and while there was some controversy over the character being rebooted again so soon after the initial ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy, Garfield’s casting was widely accepted as one of the film’s principal strengths.

Unfortunately, 2014’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ suffered from behind the scenes difficulties, script problems and studio pressure to build up a Spidey-oriented cinematic universe. Despite very healthy box office takings of $709 million worldwide, it was deemed a flop, and plans for a third film – as well as various spin-off films such as ‘Sinister Six’ and ‘Venom’ – were ditched, along with Garfield.

This lead to Spider-Man rights-holders Sony unexpectedly making a deal with Marvel Studios to share the character, resulting in the casting of Tom Holland and his scene-stealing introduction in 2016’s ‘Captain America: Civil War.’

A huge Spider-fan since childhood, Garfield has reflected on his period in the role with some sadness, admitting recently the experience left him “heartbroken a little bit.” But it’s nice to see this hasn’t dimmed his enthusiasm for the character.

As well as ‘Hacksaw Ridge’ (opening 27 January), Garfield will soon be seen in Martin Scorcese’s ‘Silence,’ opening New Year’s Day. Meanwhile, ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ swings into UK screens on 7 July.
