'American Idol' Fans Have So Much to Say After Carrie Underwood's Return Was Announced

American Idol fans got the ultimate surprise!

On Sunday, May 8, the beloved singing competition announced that none other than the inimitable Carrie Underwood would be returning to the show. Instead of being a guest judge, however, the “Before He Cheats” singer is returning to the show as a mentor for the Top Five contestants.

We needn’t remind you, Carrie got her big break on American Idol when she was crowned the winner of season four back in 2005. Since then, she’s won eight Grammys, 16 AMC Awards (three of which were for Entertainer of the Year), 23 CMT Music Awards, and countless other accolades. Needless to say, she’s a force to reckon with in country music and now she’s bringing her talent back to the place where it all began.

“Well, here’s a dream come true! ✨ #AmericanIdol icon @carrieunderwood will mentor the Top 5, live from the home of her Las Vegas residency ‘REFLECTION’ at @resortsworldlv!” American Idol revealed on Instagram. ”Who better to help our hopefuls earn a place in the Grand Finale? 🤍”

Naturally, fans of the show can hardly contain their excitement.

“SO cool that you STILL give back to AI after all your success! You are the PERFECT mentor for these kids because you've done it all and done it all RIGHT! 👏,” one fan commented on Carrie’s repost of the news. “Can’t wait to watch‼️🎤🎶,” another fan wrote. “Yay! Can’t think of a better mentor than someone who’s been there, done that! So looking forward to this @carrieunderwood!! 👸❤️,” someone else chimed in.

Excited to see what Carrie brings back to the competition stage? American Idol airs on Sundays and Mondays at 8/7c on ABC!
