Aijha Blackwell wins SEC honor after big games for 8-1 Mizzou Tigers women’s basketball

Missouri guard Aijha Blackwell was chosen SEC co-women’s basketball player of the week on Tuesday.

Blackwell posted double-doubles in consecutive games over the past week, bringing her total up to six on the season, which is tied for fourth in the country. She recorded 16 points and 15 rebounds in a win over SIUE last Thursday, followed by 20 points and 16 rebounds in a close loss at No. 5 Baylor on Saturday.

In her junior season, Blackwell is leading the SEC with 12.6 rebounds per game, which also ranks fifth nationally. Her 10.7 defensive boards per game are the best in the country.

Blackwell is also averaging 16.9 points per game, good for sixth in the conference, making her the only SEC player in the top six in scoring and rebounding. The Berkeley, Missouri, native leads Mizzou (8-1) in both categories, playing a key role in propelling the team to an 8-1 start.

This is the first SEC player of the week honor for Blackwell, who shared the award with Auburn’s Aicha Coulibaly.

Mizzou’s next game is at Missouri State at 7 p.m. Friday. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
