Use AI to transform the way you work in schools, minister tells teachers

Teachers will be able to use artificial intelligence to save them time in their jobs and should embrace the new technology like they did with calculators, the Education Secretary said today.

Gillian Keegan said some schools are already using AI technology and called on teachers to work with the Government to maximise its potential and manage the risks.

It comes after exam boards this week published guidance for schools to “protect the integrity of qualifications” amid the rise in AI, saying schools should make students do some coursework under direct supervision to ensure they are not misusing the technology.

There are growing fears about cheating with the rise of technology such as ChatGPT which can be used to write essays and coursework.

Ms Keegan said: “AI will have the power to transform a teacher’s day-to-day work. We’ve seen people using it to write lesson plans, and some interesting experiments around marking, too.”

She added: “Just as we’ve responded to other innovations like the calculator, we’ll use it to deliver better outcomes for students.”
