'AGT' contestant Nightbirde withdraws from competition after cancer 'takes turn for the worse'

Ohio singer Jane Marczewski – who earned a Golden Buzzer on "America's Got Talent" following an emotional performance about being more than her cancer – has withdrawn from the NBC talent competition to focus on her health.

Marczewski, who performed under the stage name Nightbirde, revealed on Instagram Monday that her "health has taken a turn for the worse" since her audition.

"I am so sad to announce that I won’t be able to continue forward on this season of AGT," she wrote. "Life doesn’t always give breaks to those that deserve it — but we knew that already."

USA TODAY reached out to "America's Got Talent" for comment.

During her captivating audition that aired in June, Marczewski said she has a "2% chance of survival" with "some cancer in my lungs, spine and liver." Marczewski added, "But 2% isn't 0%. Two percent is something and I wish people knew how amazing it is."

At the time, Marczewski told the judges "you can’t wait until life isn’t hard anymore to decide to be happy."

She shared more on her journey through her original song, "I'm OK," which earned a standing ovation. Mandel called her performance "the most authentic thing this season," Vergara said it was "powerful and heartfelt" and Klum said Nightbirde's voice gave her "chills." Cowell choked up during his review, saying her song "really got to me."

Cowell hit his coveted Golden Buzzer, which automatically sent Marczewski to the live shows scheduled to start on Aug. 10 following coverage of the Tokyo Olympics.

But, she announced Monday that her "fight with cancer is demanding all of my energy and attention."

Marczewski said sharing her "heart with the world on AGT has been an honor and a dream come true."

"My point of view this summer has been astounding," she wrote on Instagram." What a miracle that the pain I’ve walked through can be reworked into beauty that makes people all over the world open their eyes wider."

She concluded, "Thank you for all your support, it means the world to me. Stay with me, I’ll be better soon. I’m planning my future, not my legacy. Pretty beat up, but I’ve still got dreams."
