Agents of SHIELD star Gabriel Luna joins Pedro Pascal in The Last of Us

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Gabriel Luna has joined the cast of HBO's The Last of Us TV series.

Based on the popular PlayStation video game of the same name, the upcoming horror drama will centre on Joel Miller, a cynical and hardened apocalypse survivor who is tasked with smuggling Ellie, a 14-year-old girl who potentially holds the secret to killing off the outbreak's virus, out of an oppressive quarantine zone.

During the pair's journey across a desolate US, they start to depend on one another and strike up an unlikely bond as they find themselves facing off against infected creatures and human enemies, too.

The Mandalorian's Pedro Pascal and Game of Thrones' Bella Ramsey are on board to play Joel and Ellie, respectively, while Luna – who has also appeared in titles such as True Detective and Terminator: Dark Fate – is set to play Tommy, Joel's brother.

Other characters expected to show up include Ellie's love interest Riley, Joel's smuggling partner Tess, Fireflies leader Marlene and Tommy's partner Maria.

Chernobyl's Craig Mazin and the game's creator Neil Druckmann will write the series, and act as executive producers alongside GOT's Carolyn Strauss, the original game's development studio Naughty Dog's Evan Wells and PlayStation Productions' Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.

It has also been previously announced that the first episode will be directed by Russian filmmaker Kantemir Balagov.
