STORY: Travelers at Frankfurt train station weren't in a good mood Friday morning (December 8).They expressed anger and frustration as a strike by train drivers hit travel plans.Germany's GDL union began industrial action on Thursday (December 7) evening - and it said it would run until Friday night.“It’s such reckless behavior for the travelers. It’s very difficult for me to get home. I want to go to Leipzig today and I found two trains which actually run so I’m really very lucky.”German rail operator Deutsche Bahn said it aimed to keep around a fifth of its long-distance services running. The GDL has demanded a reduction in working hours for shift workers - from 38 to 35 hours per week.It also wants a raise of almost $600 per month, and a one-off inflation bonus of around $3,200.Some travelers supported Friday's strike.“I think the strike is justified. I myself went on a seven-week long strike in the 1980s, I can’t remember whether it was 1984 or 1986, to demand a 35-hour work week and I believe it’s high time we introduce this system in other sectors.”It's not the first time the train drivers' union has taken action, as it held a 20-hour strike at Deutsche Bahn last month. The GDL said Friday's action was due to be the last one this year, and that travelers shouldn't worry about their Christmas travel plans.Though it predicts longer strikes in January.
