Adidas Originals leaps into the metaverse with BAYC and Punks Comic

Clothing giant Adidas Originals has become the latest global name to embrace the metaverse through a collaboration with Bored Ape Yacht Club, Punks Comic and NFT collector ‘gmoneyNFT‘.

The brand’s first venture was revealed in a video showing three characters based on each collaborator entering the ‘metaverse‘ and stopping at the infamous Adidas Originals logo in what resembles a barren ‘digital land‘ environment.

In the tweet, Adidas told its four million followers that “it’s time to enter a world of limitless possibilities” and directed them to an animated webpage displaying a QR code with the headline “Adidas Originals voyages Into the Metaverse, led by NFT pioneers gmoney, the Bored Ape Yacht Club and PUNKS Comic. Let’s go”.

The clothing brand also changed its profile picture to a Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT wearing Adidas sportswear to signal its inclusion and entry into the ever-expanding BAYC community.

The ape Adidas purchased – BAYC #8774 – was snapped up for 46 ETH ($205k) two months ago and has reportedly been given the name ‘Indigo Herz‘ – a “rebellious optimist who sees the world through heart eyes”.

Adidas has teased a potential collaboration for many weeks now in a series of tweets that first revealed it had purchased a plot of land in metaverse platform The Sandbox – which owns an incredibly rare BAYC- and asked its followers what should be built in the ‘AdiVerse‘.

The clothing brand then revealed a partnership with leading cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, which welcomed Adidas by saying “gm@adidasoriginals. Welcome to the party, partner!” on Twitter.

Adidas also launched a ‘Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP)‘ NFT on its app named “Adidas Originals: our future started here“.

Users who attended the POAP were given an exclusive Adidas NFT, which the firm described as “our way of rewarding you for following your curiosity as we explore this new age of originality together”.
