ABC renewals: 'The Rookie,' 'The Goldbergs' will be back; 'Black-ish' plans final season

ABC's "The Rookie," a top performer in USA TODAY's 24th annual Save Our Shows poll, is staying on the beat.

On Friday, the network renewed the Nathan Fillion police drama and four other series for the 2021-22 TV season, which also marks the eighth and final season of family comedy "Black-ish."

Along with "The Rookie," which will enter its fourth season, renewals include drama "A Million Little Things" and three comedies: "The Goldbergs" (Season 9), "Roseanne" spinoff "The Conners" (Season 4) and recent arrival "Home Economics" (Season 2).

Canceled shows include comedy "American Housewife" after five seasons; two sophomore series, drama "For Life" and comedy "Mixed-ish," a "Black-ish" spinoff; and two midseason launches, Katey Sagal drama "Rebel" and Kyra Sedgwick comedy "Call Your Mother."

ABC also began revealing which pilots will become series, including a reboot of iconic period comedy "The Wonder Years," featuring a Black middle-class family in 1960s Montgomery, Alabama, starring Dulé Hill with Don Cheadle as the narrator.

Status report: Is your favorite network TV series canceled, renewed or ‘on the bubble’?

"The Rookie," which has been "on the bubble" between renewal and cancellation, has a vocal fan base that pushed for renewal, exemplified by its performance in the 24th annual Save Our Shows poll. With nearly 80,000 votes counted, 51% of participants voted to keep "The Rookie," just 1% behind top finisher "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist," but "The Rookie" had the largest gap of any between votes favoring renewal or cancellation, with only 8% seeking to drop it.

"Black-ish" creator Kenya Barris announced the "Black-ish" final season Friday on social media, describing the news as "both exciting and bittersweet."

"In this day and age it is rare to get to decide when your show should come to an end, and we are grateful along with ABC to be able to make this final season exactly what we’d hoped for – and to do it with the entire and AMAZINGLY STELLAR cast coming back to close this chapter out with us the right way!" he wrote about the comedy, which stars Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross.

Barris, who has mixed commentary on important social issues with comedy in the weekly visits with the Johnson family, expressed pride in "the conversations we’ve started along the way," he wrote. "None of this would have been possible without our audience and supporters, who have championed the show every step of the journey; allowing us to change not just the narrative of Black Families, but of Family, Culture, and the World in general. All the while allowing us to talk about things that people were not supposed to talk about period... especially on a network television comedy."

Among the other renewals, "The Conners," a "Roseanne" spinoff that stars Sara Gilbert, John Goodman, and Laurie Metcalf, is ABC's top-rated comedy this season.

News of other ABC renewals, cancellations and series pickups is expected in the coming days. The network will outline its full 2021-22 plans during its annual presentation to advertisers on Tuesday.
