Yahoo Movies 9-1-1 confirms season 5 premiere date
Fox has confirmed the premiere date for the fifth season of drama 9-1-1.
The show, which is Fox's most-watched and highest-rated scripted series, will be returning to screens on September 20, a month earlier than first expected.
However, fans will have to wait a little longer for the third series of spin-off 9-1-1: Lone Star, as the Texas-based series isn't expected to return until the new year.
It's also been reported that both 9-1-1 shows would air back-to-back once the football season in the US ends, while in May, after both shows were handed a renewal by Fox, it was teased that fans should "keep an eye out for a crossover in the back half of the [TV] season".
9-1-1 follows the lives of first responders, including Captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause), Evan Buck Buckley (Oliver Stark), Eddie Diaz (Ryan Guzman) and Hen Wilson (Aisha Hinds), as they respond to emergencies in Los Angeles.
News of 9-1-1's new premiere date comes after show star John Harlan Kim, who plays Albert Han, shared a sneak peek behind-the-scenes as filming on the new episodes began last week.
"Happy first week of shooting of Season 5 to the sensational team down at @911onfox!" he captioned the picture, which saw him covered in fake cuts and bruises.
Meanwhile, the second season of 9-1-1: Lone Star featured the shock death of character Charles Vega, played by Derek Webster.
Speaking about the decision to kill off the character, showrunner Tim Minear told TVLine: "It was not a no-brainer. In fact, I got a lot of pushback from different quarters. It's not like Derek's people told me I couldn't have him next year."
Minear went on to say that he felt the twist provided Gina Torres, who plays Charles's wife Tommy, with "a lot of potential story".
"You know my philosophy: Why wait?" added Minear.
"My staff goes insane because I always pull up story points and say, 'We're just going to go right to it.' If you look at the serial arsonist episode, you'd normally wait until the end to reveal who it was, but I was like, 'We're going to reveal it in the middle.'
"On one hand, killing off Derek seemed like a gamble, but was it really? I knew I'd be giving Gina Torres an acting showcase."
9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star air on FOX in the US and Sky Witness in the UK.
