From sculpting your silhouette to flattering your bust under low-cut tops, there are plenty of reasons to reach for a minimizer bra. These styles redistribute the weight in your chest to take an inch or two off your bustline, so your clothes lay exactly how you want them to. And they’re not just for people with large chests — some brands make minimizers in sizes ranging from a B cup to an I cup.

The best minimizer bras reduce fullness without flattening and smooth around your arms and back for a sleek look. They’re made from stretchy fabric, with soft, supportive bands and wide straps that don’t dig into your shoulders, says Cami Raymond, Senior Design Director for Ruby Ribbon. Say goodbye to lumpy sweaters and overflowing necklines: We’ve found the top minimizer bras from Spanx, Wacoal, and other trusted brands, at every price point.

Best Overall: Le Mystère Side Profile Smoothing Minimizer Bra

See at Amazon.com

$64 at Nordstrom.com

What We Love: It’s pretty, low-profile, and not too pricey.

What We Don’t Love: It only comes in a few band sizes.

The Le Mystère Side Profile Smoothing Minimizer Bra looks cute and gets the job done without being too pricey — everything we could ask for in a top overall pick. Designed with molded underwire cups and a smoothing liner, it looks great under everything from thin T-shirts to silky dresses. Plus, the soft cups offer plenty of support without any pesky padding (say goodbye to crumpled cups).

We love that this bra is seamless for all-day comfort — plus, the sculpting side panels have delicate lace details that rival traditional underwire styles. Adjustable straps and a wide hook-and-eye closure at the back of the band allow you to customize the fit. We only wish it came in more band sizes.

Size: 34C–38H | Colors: 2 | Material: Polyamide, elastane, spandex

Best with Side Support: Bali Passion For Comfort Minimizer Underwire Bra

$23 at Amazon.com

See at Balibras.com

What We Love: This budget-friendly bra can take up to 1.5 inches off of your bust, thanks to hidden underwires.

What We Don’t Love: The band is on the thinner side.

Need some extra support on the side? We like the Bali Passion for Comfort Minimizer Bra. It offers full coverage, with hidden underwires for extra lift and support. And if you’re wary of stray wires poking you underneath your favorite shirts, rest assured — these are encased in fabric to prevent chafing.

When it comes to smoothing your sides, this bra is an overachiever: It has side panels, back panels, and contoured straps to keep lumps and bumps in check. With elegant lace insets where the seamless cups meet the straps, it’s equal parts chic and comfortable. Plus, it comes in lots of colors, patterns, and sizes. But the band is on the thinner side since it only has two rows of hook-and-eye closures.

Size: 34C–44G | Colors: 15 | Material: Nylon, spandex

Best Strapless: Lilyette Strapless Minimizer Bra

See at Balibras.com

$48 at Barenecessities.com

What We Love: Silicone grips inside prevent slippage.

What We Don’t Love: The detachable straps aren’t convertible.

For halter tops, strapless sundresses, and low-back gowns, there’s the Lilyette Strapless Minimizer Bra. With a sweetheart neckline, invisible boning, and silicone grips along the top and sides, it’s a reliable staple you can wear every day (not just on special occasions).

Seamless molded cups and underwires help reduce your chest up to 1.5 inches, without causing dreaded uni-boob. We also like the four-row hook-and-eye closure at the back of the band, for an adjustable fit. And for days when you need even more support, this bra comes with detachable straps. Just note that the straps aren’t convertible, meaning you can’t cross them in the back.

Size: 34C–40DD | Colors: 2 | Material: Nylon, elastane, silicone

Best Budget: Vanity Fair Women's Beauty Back Smoothing Minimizer Bra

$25 at Amazon.com

See at Barenecessities.com

What We Love: It has full-coverage cups and is sold in sets of three.

What We Don’t Love: It’s pretty plain.

The Vanity Fair Beauty Back Smoothing Minimizer Bra offers shaping and smoothing for $50 or less (depending on the color and running promotion). It has full-coverage cups that won’t give way when you bend over, plus wide straps and a ballet back for ample support to heavy breasts. Four-way stretch fabric and side-smoothing panels work together to reduce your bust by up to 1.5 inches.

This bra is a favorite of Ghana Sarfo, brand ambassador for Snatched Body: “It’s comfortable, lightweight, and will ensure your clothes look flawless when worn,” she says. Although the design is pretty plain, we love that you can pick up a pack of three for less than the cost of some other bras on our list.

Size: 32C–46H | Colors: 14 | Material: Nylon, spandex, polyester

Best T-Shirt: Wacoal Women's Visual Effects Minimizer Bra

$72 at Amazon.com

$51 at Bloomingdales.com

What We Love: Subtle stretch lace adds detail without showing through your tops and dresses.

What We Don’t Love: The straps may be too thin for people with larger chests.

The Wacoal Visual Effects Minimizer Bra comfortably reduces your bustline by up to one inch, unlike many traditional T-shirt bras. It has underwires and dual-layered molded cups for maximum support where you need it most. Floral and stretch lace helps this bra blend into your lingerie drawer — and won’t show through your favorite white tee.

A leotard back and adjustable stretch straps round out this well-designed pick. We only wish the straps were wider, especially for people with larger chests.

Size: 32C–44I | Colors: 4 | Material: Nylon, spandex

Most Comfortable: Lively The Minimizer Bra

$20 at Amazon.com

$48 at Macys.com

What We Love: It has thick straps and can be converted to a racerback.

What We Don’t Love: The straps may be too long for some people.

A T-shirt bra with a flexible underwire, the Lively The Minimizer Bra is designed for all-day comfort. It has stretchy, full-coverage cups with just the right amount of compression to take up to 1.5 inches off of your bust. Extra-wide, adjustable straps help distribute the weight of your breasts and won’t dig into your shoulders, while the ballet back adds lift and support.

Another reason to invest? The J-hook converts the bra into a racerback in seconds, for layering underneath your summer tops. Plus, the bra is completely smooth, with no lace or texture in sight to keep it undetectable. But the straps may be too long for some people — a few reviewers have noticed that they can’t tighten the straps enough to keep them in place.

Size: 32C–40G | Colors: 2 | Material: Nylon, spandex

Best Plus-Size: Glamorise Full-Figure Wireless Minimizer

$42 at Amazon.com

See at Glamorise.com

What We Love: It comes in a wide range of sizes and has extra cushioning in the band.

What We Don’t Love: It’s wireless, so don’t expect a ton of lift.

Some minimizers on our list only come in a few sizes, but the Glamorise MagicLift Minimizer Bra fits everyone from size 36C to 50I. Shaped like a sports bra, this wireless option can shave up to a cup off your bustline for a flatter silhouette. We also like that it has extra padding in the band and straps, to prevent irritation.

From the breathable lace to the full-coverage cups, this minimizer is designed with all-day wear in mind. And it’s made from moisture-wicking fabric, to keep you feeling dry, comfortable, and confident. FYI: Since it doesn’t have an underwire, it won’t lift your chest as much as some of our other picks will.

Size: 36C–50I | Colors: 5 | Material: Polyamide, polyester, cotton, elastane

Best Splurge: Simone Perele Andora Minimizer Underwire Bra

See at Amazon.com

See at Barenecessities.com

What We Love: It starts at a B cup, unlike most other bras on our list.

What We Don’t Love: The band is pretty thin and we wish it came in more sizes.

With delicate lace embroidery, a bow, and seven sophisticated colors to choose from, the Simone Perele Andora Minimizer bra is a worthy addition to your lingerie collection. It’s our recommended splurge because, as chic as it is, it still minimizes your chest by up to one cup size. Plus, it’s made from firm, silky microfiber that’s both compressive and supportive.

Similar to other bras on our list, this one has a ballet back to smooth your curves. And while we like that it’s available in cup sizes ranging from B to G, we wish there were more band sizes to choose from. It’s also worth noting that the band only has two rows of hook-and-eye closures, making it thinner than some of our other picks. Prefer a matching set? The brand also offers matching underwear that’s just as pretty, including thong, brief, and boyshort options.

Size: 32B–42G | Colors: 7 | Material: Polyester, polyamide, elastane

Best Wireless: Spanx Low Profile Cushioned Underwire Minimizer Bra

$72 at Nordstrom.com

See at Spanx.com

What We Love: The breathable fabric wicks sweat away and dries quickly.

What We Don’t Love: It comes in a very small range of sizes and colors.

InStyle’s favorite brand Spanx does it again with the Low Profile Wireless Minimizer Bra. We like that the nylon and elastane blend feels breathable and dries quickly (no more trapped sweat!). Even without an underwire, it can minimize your bust by up to one inch while still highlighting the natural shape of your chest.

The adjustable straps are padded, so they won’t dig into your shoulders, and the band features three rows of hook-and-eye closures to keep everything in place. With molded, full-coverage cups, this bra is ideal for layering underneath button-down shirts and soft T-shirts. But we wish it came in more sizes and colors.

Size: 32DDD–42G | Colors: 2 | Material: Nylon, elastane

Best Convertible: Thirdlove 24/7 Unlined Minimizer Bra

$64 at Qvc.com

$76 at Thirdlove.com

What We Love: It starts at a B cup and has convertible straps.

What We Don’t Love: It doesn’t come in hal cup sizes, unlike many other ThirdLove bras, and the band is thin.

ThirdLove has long been an InStyle favorite for comfortable, practical bras. The 24/7 Classic Unlined Minimizer is no different, with full coverage cups, convertible straps, and a design that reduces your bust by up to 2 inches (the most on our list). Nylon and spandex create a breathable bra you can wear every day, while wide panels sculpt your sides and back for a sleek look under your favorite tops.

Choose from sizes ranging from 32B to 44H in two colors. However, it’s worth noting that this bra doesn’t come in half cup sizes, unlike many other styles from ThirdLove. We also wish the band was thinner — it only has two rows of hook-and-loop closures.

Size: 32B–44H | Colors: 2 | Material: Nylon, spandex

Best Athletic: Glamorise MagicLift Seamless Sports Bra

$37 at Amazon.com

$57 at Barenecessities.com

What We Love: The cups don’t stretch, but the rest of the bra does.

What We Don’t Love: It may run small, and the material isn’t as soft.

With a ballet back, bounce control, and four rows of hook-and-eye closures, the Glamorise MagicLift Seamless Sports Bra combines many minimizer must-haves in a bra you can wear to barre class or Pilates. Moisture-wicking, quick-drying material keeps you feeling cool and comfortable. Another bonus? The band’s two-way stretch prevents the straps from falling down during reps.

We love that it comes in five colors in a wide range of sizes, from 34B to 50J. But some wearers have found that this bra runs small. It’s also not as soft as some of our other top picks are, so we wouldn’t recommend wearing it all day long.

Size: 34B-50J | Colors: 5 | Material: Polyester, polyamide, elastane

Best Seamless: Wacoal Slimline Seamless Underwire Minimizer Bra

See at Amazon.com

See at Barenecessities.com

What We Love: This bra may be seamless, but it still has an underwire for extra support.

What We Don’t Love: It has a thinner band.

Trusted by many large-busted shoppers, Wacoal is known for its thoughtfully designed bras. The Slimline Seamless Underwire Minimizer bra is our top seamless pick because it’s low-profile and easy to wear under almost anything. Full-coverage cups shrink your bustline by up to an inch, while stretch microfiber hugs your curves and won’t irritate your skin.

We like the low-stretch straps, which have scalloped edges, and the pretty embroidered details (that won’t show through your shirt). The comfort of a bralette with the support of an underwire? Sign us up! We just wish the band was wider.

Size: 32C–40DDD | Colors: 2 | Material: Polyester, nylon, spandex, elastane

What to Keep in Mind

  • Fit: “When looking for a minimizer bra, it’s important to look for a bra that fits your shape,” says Sarah Sullivan, Creative Director of Lively. Check the underwire first — it should support the weight of your chest and allow your breast tissue to spread out, she says. Then, look at the cups — are they shaped in a way that redistributes your chest, instead of pushing it up or out? She also suggests making sure the bra has adjustable straps that will comfortably hold the weight of your chest all day long (whether that means they’re wide, padded, or both).

  • Compression: The right amount of compression is up to you, Sarfo says. While minimizers are designed to reduce your chest, they shouldn’t completely distort your silhouette, she explains. Sullivan adds that a minimizer bra should never flatten your breasts the way a sports bra does. In general, aim for a bra that looks great and feels great.

  • Ballet Backs: Many minimizers have ballet backs, meaning the straps and band create a “U” shape. This design provides great support for larger breasts because it allows the band to hug your body closely, Sullivan says. According to Raymond, ballet backs also help keep the band in place and lift your chest more. Other bonuses? A longer-looking torso, better posture, and straps that won’t slip off of your shoulders.

  • Padding: If minimizing is your goal, avoid bras with thick padding, Sullivan says. Luckily, most minimizer bras aren’t padded — instead, they use a compressive fabric that’s thicker than other unlined bras. This material provides modesty without adding inches to your bust, she explains.

Your Questions, Answered

What does a minimizer bra do?

A minimizer bra makes your breasts appear smaller by flattening them against your chest more than a traditional bra does, Sarfo says. Some people may choose to wear minimizers because they like the look or because it helps their clothes fit better. Others like the way minimizers reduce bounce, she explains.

Should a minimizer bra feel tight?

Sarfo says you should be fitted for a minimizer bra the same way you would be for a regular bra to prevent any pain, spillage, or gapping. She adds that minimizers should feel tighter than traditional bras do, but they should never feel painful — that means you’re wearing the wrong size. Make sure your minimizer feels snug but doesn’t dig into your skin.
