What to Keep in Mind
Fit: “When looking for a minimizer bra, it’s important to look for a bra that fits your shape,” says Sarah Sullivan, Creative Director of Lively. Check the underwire first — it should support the weight of your chest and allow your breast tissue to spread out, she says. Then, look at the cups — are they shaped in a way that redistributes your chest, instead of pushing it up or out? She also suggests making sure the bra has adjustable straps that will comfortably hold the weight of your chest all day long (whether that means they’re wide, padded, or both).
Compression: The right amount of compression is up to you, Sarfo says. While minimizers are designed to reduce your chest, they shouldn’t completely distort your silhouette, she explains. Sullivan adds that a minimizer bra should never flatten your breasts the way a sports bra does. In general, aim for a bra that looks great and feels great.
Ballet Backs: Many minimizers have ballet backs, meaning the straps and band create a “U” shape. This design provides great support for larger breasts because it allows the band to hug your body closely, Sullivan says. According to Raymond, ballet backs also help keep the band in place and lift your chest more. Other bonuses? A longer-looking torso, better posture, and straps that won’t slip off of your shoulders.
Padding: If minimizing is your goal, avoid bras with thick padding, Sullivan says. Luckily, most minimizer bras aren’t padded — instead, they use a compressive fabric that’s thicker than other unlined bras. This material provides modesty without adding inches to your bust, she explains.
