The ‘70s hairstyling technique is back (and we’re not mad about it).

‘90s-runway-model blowouts had its moment, but now there’s another decade-reminiscent haircut we’d like to bring to the forefront. “The best way to describe a feathered hairstyle is a cut that is layered finely and is supposed to resemble the delicate layering of a bird's feathers. You can style this look with a side part or center part, making it a versatile look that works for all face shapes,” says celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons.

In addition to being flattering for all face shapes, feathered locks can be achieved at any hair length (although it does work better with finer, straight hair textures). When asking for a feathered haircut with long hair, ask your stylist to ensure the layers are feathered towards the ends of your hair, which avoids removing too much bulk. Pro tip: Having the hair tapered towards the ends also helps better shape your face.

Feathered Long Bob

A feathered haircut on short hair is great for adding dimension and volume. You can opt for a more ‘70s style shag feathered look by styling with a texturizing spray, or you can do a sexy ‘90s blowout look emphasizing the layers in a more sleek way, as opposed to a messier bed-head look.

Because longer hair weighs more, a feathered look on longer hair will appear a bit less choppy unless you add shorter layers to the front that will frame the face.
