‘90s-runway-model blowouts had its moment, but now there’s another decade-reminiscent haircut we’d like to bring to the forefront. If we’ve learned anything from ‘70s trends, it’s how to rock voluminous hair (think Farrah Fawcett). In 2022, the wispy, voluminous style is back—and this time we’re naming them feathered hairstyles.

“The best way to describe a feathered hairstyle is a cut that is layered finely and is supposed to resemble the delicate layering of a bird's feathers. You can style this look with a side part or center part, making it a versatile look that works for all face shapes,” says celebrity hairstylist Andrew Fitzsimons.

In addition to being flattering for all face shapes, feathered locks can be achieved at any hair length (although it does work better with finer, straight hair textures). Ready to take your blowouts to the next level? Check out these stylist-approved feathered haircuts below—and feel free to screenshot for your next appointment.

Long Feathered Layers

When asking for a feathered haircut with long hair, ask your stylist to ensure the layers are feathered towards the ends of your hair, which avoids removing too much bulk. Pro tip: Having the hair tapered towards the ends also helps better shape your face.

Feathered Long Bob

A feathered haircut on short hair is great for adding dimension and volume. You can opt for a more ‘70s style shag feathered look by styling with a texturizing spray, or you can do a sexy ‘90s blowout look emphasizing the layers in a more sleek way, as opposed to a messier bed-head look.

Feathered Curtain Bangs

Because longer hair weighs more, a feathered look on longer hair will appear a bit less choppy unless you add shorter layers to the front that will frame the face.

Feathered and Fringed

Love to rock a bang? Stylists agree that feathered hairstyles complement bangs perfectly. Work with your stylist to frame the layers in a way that blends into the fringe.

Feather Shaped Volume

“Since this style typically takes on a  V-shape, I recommend using a razor as it creates texture throughout the layers of the style, enhancing the feathered look,” says Andrew. This particular cut feels almost ‘mullet’ or ‘wolf cut’ reminiscent—the body and shape will show a lot of movement.

Short Feathered Bob

You can still hop on the feathered hair movement if you have super short hair. In fact, feathered hair gives a bob the illusion of having more hair and dimension.

Feathered Razor Cut

This is a good style to show your stylist to explain the kind of weight you want your feathered hairstyle to have. The strands feel light and airy, and all the little razored portions lend itself well to finer hair textures.
