7 new COVID-19 deaths reported in SLO County. Here are the age ranges

Seven more San Luis Obispo County residents have died from COVID-19, the Public Health Department reported on Tuesday.

These are the first deaths announced in more than two weeks. The deaths impacted older residents: Three people who died were older than 85, three were between the ages of 65-84 and one was 50-64, according to public health data.

A total of 365 residents have now died over the course of the pandemic, dating back to March 2020.

Tuesday’s update was the first in a week after the Public Health Department took a break from reporting data over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Despite the deaths, the number of new cases continues to hold steady with the 14-day average hovering in the mid-30s for more than three weeks.

Since last Tuesday, a total of 219 new cases have been reported, and the number of active cases is at 174, the lowest level it’s been since mid-July.

On the hospital front, a total of 13 county residents are receiving inpatient treatment for COVID-19, including four in the intensive care unit. Total hospitalizations actually fell to as low as six just two days ago, but a total of nine new people were hospitalized for COVID-19 since last Tuesday, according to county health data.

In total, 30,459 San Luis Obispo County residents have tested positive for coronavirus since March 2020.

Here’s how local coronavirus case numbers from the past seven days break down day by day:

Wednesday: 44 Thursday: 37 Friday: 46 Saturday: 32

Sunday: 5 Monday: 29 Tuesday: 26

The county Public Health Department is not providing information about how many newly reported individual cases, hospitalizations and deaths involve vaccinated and unvaccinated people due to resource limitations and privacy concerns.

Instead, Public Health is releasing weekly data showing the percentages of unvaccinated people who’ve contracted COVID-19, received hospital treatment for the virus or died from it since June 15.

The latest county numbers as of Nov. 12 show that unvaccinated people account for 77% of COVID-19 cases, 82% of hospitalizations and 72% of deaths since June 15.

On Friday, the World Health Organization announced that a new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, was discovered in South Africa. The Omicron variant has not reached California or San Luis Obispo County yet, but health officials urge residents to get vaccinated to protect against COVID-19.
