In accordance with their manufacturer’s mantra, the Apple AirPods just work. They offer consistent battery life, accessible sound and seamless connection with iOS devices. Because of that trifecta, the AirPods are often perceived as a benchmark in the earbuds space—and rightfully so. By most accounts, they’ve earned it. But they've also lost a few steps over the years.

So, what are you to do if you’re looking for a better deal on some great earbuds? You’re in luck, because we have just the answer(s) to that question. Thanks to the recent explosion of true wireless earbuds, there are several impressive, affordable alternatives that offer similar (and, in most cases, better) features and performance to Apple’s madly popular earbuds.

Here are seven of the best AirPods alternatives we’ve tested to date, all priced below the $100 threshold:

1. Anker Soundcore Liberty 2

Anker is quickly becoming a veteran in the audio landscape, and the company nailed it with the Soundcore Liberty 2. They offer about 7-8 hours of battery life (our testing was around 7) which easily outdoes Apple’s AirPods Pro. They also offer IPX5 water resistance and include multiple wings and eartips to help ensure a proper fit with even the oddest of ear shapes and sizes.

They also happen to be one of the better-sounding earbuds we’ve tested under $100, with a customizable EQ that really helps dial things in. The Liberty 2 do have a rather flimsy-feeling case, but they’re a solid pair of buds that make the most of what they have to work with.

2. House of Marley Champion

House of Marley's Champion earbuds are as stylish as they are sustainable.

The Champion represents the most environmentally-friendly pick on this list, since they’re crafted primarily from sustainable and recycled materials that include bamboo, natural fibers and silicone from post-consumer waste. The Champion claim 8 hours of battery life, plus they’re IPX4 water-resistant, aesthetically pleasing thanks to their wood finish and armed with sound that’s pleasantly good for their price point.

3. Google Pixel Buds A-Series

We were among the many that were skeptical about Google’s ability to trim a significant amount of cost off the Pixel Buds A-Series while holding onto the qualities that made the previous Pixel Buds so enticing. Google pulled it off, however, bringing back the built-in Google Assistant functionality, fantastically approachable design and surprisingly stellar sound to go with one of the most clever and ergonomic designs in the business. The A-Series pack in all that at a price that’s a whole lot cheaper, and as such, a far better value. These are Google's try at AirPods, and they're better in multiple ways.

4. JLab Go Air

Like Anker, JLab is another brand that just knows how to make good, cheap stuff. The Epic Air Sport are our favorite under $100 for your daily workout, but it’s their ultra-cheap relatives, the Go Air, that should be high on the list for budget shoppers. For the cost of an Uber after a night out, the Go Air give you identical, if not occasionally better battery life than Apple’s AirPods in a ridiculously small package. They also pack decent sound, and a few other solid features, but at this price, we’re just stoked they work well.

5. Sony WF-XB700

Sony's WF-XB700 bring the bass and plenty of other delights at a low price.
Sony's WF-XB700 bring the bass and plenty of other delights at a low price.

Contrary to the miniature JLab Go Air, Sony’s budget earbuds are quite hefty. The bulkiness is a small price to pay, however, for a cheap pair of earbuds that boast nine hours of battery life, IPX4 water resistance and good, if bass-heavy sound. They aren’t anywhere near Sony’s flagship WF-1000XM4, but they are a heck of a lot cheaper, making them an excellent entry-level option.

With a refreshing color selection that includes gold, green, pink and black, the ColorBuds stand apart from the rest of the pack right out of the packaging. They offer solid sound, and while they don’t stack up quite as well performance-wise as some other selections on this list, the ColorBuds last all of their advertised 6-hour battery life (or more) and come equipped with an IPX5 water resistance rating. If style and durability are what you’re after, the ColorBuds might be your speed.

7. OnePlus Buds

The OnePlus Buds clone the AirPods style, but also bring some improvements to the package.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? The OnePlus Buds perfect the Apple aesthetic better than any other entry on this list. They also toss in 7 hours of battery life, IPX4 water resistance and decently balanced sound. There isn’t a lot else going on for the OnePlus Buds, but they are the fake Gucci bags of the earbuds world that frugal iPhone owners will definitely want to consider.
