The latest news on COVID-19 developments in Canada (all times Eastern): 10:35 a.m. Ontario is reporting 4,156 cases of COVID-19 and 28 more deaths linked to the virus. Health Minister Christine Elliott says there are 1,254 new cases in Toronto, 593 in Peel Region, and 476 in York Region. She also says there are 340 new cases in Ottawa and 248 in Durham Region. The ministry of health says that 642 people are in intensive care. Ontario says that more than 112,000 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine were administered since Tuesday's report. --- 9 a.m. Two health networks in Toronto say shortages of COVID-19 vaccine are forcing them to limit or close immunization clinics. Scarborough Health Network says it will be closing its Centennial College and Centenary hospital clinics today. University Health Network says it has had to pause registration for appointments for adults over 18 who qualify for vaccination based on their postal code. NEW YORK — Kohl’s Corp. says it's adding three independent members to its board of directors as part of an agreement it struck with a key activist investor group that has been fighting to exert more control. The new independent directors nominated by the investor group are Margaret Jenkins, a former marketing executive at restaurant chain Denny's, and Thomas Kingsbury, former CEO of Burlington Stores, the company said Wednesday. They will join Kohl’s board as of the close of this year's annual shareholders' meeting, to be held in May. An additional independent director identified by Kohl’s, and agreed to by the investor group, will join the board at the same time: Christine Day, former CEO of Lululemon. The investor group, made up of Macellum Advisors, Ancora Holdings, Legion Partners Asset Management and 4010 Capital, accounts for 9.3% of the company's shares. For several months, the group has been fighting with Kohl's, pushing to nominate nine members to its board that it said could fix its problems. The group believes that Kohl's hasn’t kept up with the fast-changing retail landscape and needs to cut its inventory, fix its store label assortment, cut expenses and improve its app and website, among other things. Kohl's had been pushing back, arguing that any efforts to take control of the board would derail its progress. Like many department stores, Kohl’s faced challenges even before the pandemic forced the chain and its peers to close temporarily during the spring of 2020. The Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin-based retailer was wrestling with increasing competition from online players like Amazon and discounters like Target and Walmart, both of which have been sprucing up their assortments. The pandemic has accelerated shoppers’ shift online and increased the dominance of stores like Walmart, which offer one-stop shopping. But Kohl's has seen improving sales and offered an upbeat outlook when it reported fiscal fourth-quarter results on March 2. HALIFAX — The crew of a Canadian Forces helicopter landed the aircraft in a park east of Halifax on Tuesday after they noticed a warning indicator in the cockpit. No one was injured and no damage was reported after the CH-148 Cyclone touched down in Rainbow Haven Beach Provincial Park in the afternoon. The Royal Canadian Air Force says the helicopter was on a routine flight near its base at 12 Wing Shearwater, which is on the east side of Halifax harbour. The military says the aircrew was following standard operating procedures for a "precautionary landing" when the decision was made to head for the seaside park, about 10 kilometres east of the base. The Department of National Defence did not disclose further details, saying the incident is under investigation. The helicopter was towed back to the base along local roads on Tuesday night. "Returning the aircraft to 12 Wing will enable technicians, flight safety personnel and the aircraft manufacturer … to determine the cause of the cockpit indication," the military said in a statement. The military's fleet of maritime helicopters was temporarily grounded after a relatively new Cyclone crashed off the coast of Greece on April 29, 2020, killing all six people aboard. All six were based in Halifax. The crash in the Mediterranean Sea marked the largest loss of life in one day for the Canadian Armed Forces since six Canadian soldiers were killed in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan on Easter Sunday 2007. An ongoing Air Force flight safety investigation has been focused on aircraft systems and human factors as possible causes. In June 2020, the military said preliminary findings indicated the helicopter did not respond the way the crew had expected as the aircraft was coming around to land on the Canadian frigate HMCS Fredericton. At the time, Air Force officials said the pilot attempted to make a number of manoeuvres while the Cyclone's "flight director,'' or autopilot, was still engaged. Rather than turning off, the autopilot started to work against the pilot before the helicopter crashed into the water at high speed.
