Bombay Begums
Streaming on Netflix, Bombay Begums features the stories of five ambitious women whose lives are all interconnected. From fertility issues to sex work and sexual assault, the series does not shy away from talking about otherwise stigmatized topics. While this may not be the lightest watch, it will definitely keep you hooked.
2. Made In Heaven
This Sobhita Dhulipala starrer tackles one of India’s most favourite obsessions — weddings. The Amazon Prime show explores weddings from the lens of traditions clashing with contemporary values and how that transpires in the lives of the people involved. With Season 2 slated to go on floors soon, this is the best time to catch up on this critically-acclaimed series.
3. Leila
Based on the eponymous novel, this Huma Qureshi-starrer managed to ruffle many feathers with its release. Streaming on Netflix, this series features the story of a woman trying to find her missing child in a totalitarian regime in the near future. But some might say that what is depicted as dystopian doesn’t seem too far from current realities, thus eliciting some controversy.
4. Four More Shots Please!
Every list of women-led Indian series is incomplete without a mention of this, although some might say that the show is more a “cringe watch”. Capturing the lives of four friends in the city, this Amazon Prime series reels you in with the drama, unique storylines and the chemistry of the cast. Don’t be surprised if you end up missing your own girl gang when you watch this one.
5. Ladies Room
An oldie but a goodie, this YRF production showcases two women played by Saba Azad and Shreya Dhanwanthary struggling to navigate the challenges of adulthood. Hilariously shot across six different washrooms, this YouTube series will have you giddy with laughter. But, fair warning: this may not be one you want to watch with your parents around!
