5-year-old run over by lawn mower while playing in SC yard flown to hospital, cops say

A 5-year-old was playing in his yard when a lawn mower ran over him, leaving him seriously hurt, South Carolina news outlets reported.

The child was flown to a Charleston-area hospital after the accident on Saturday, Aug. 13, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office told WCBD.

Deputies were called at about 5 p.m. to a home on Lake Moultrie Drive in Bonneau, roughly 40 miles north of Charleston. The child’s parents told officials their son had been playing on the lawn while his dad cut the grass, according to WCIV.

The 5-year-old came “out of nowhere” before his dad saw the child’s hand beneath the lawn mower, officials told news outlets.

Deputies said the boy’s parents cared for him before he was rushed to a medical center with serious hand and leg injuries. The ordeal was considered an accident, according to WCSC.

The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ requests for additional information on Aug. 16.
