If you’ve been out of the trend cycle for a minute, it may surprise you to hear that everything from 2002 is officially cool again. That’s certainly the case with shoes (platforms, creepers, dad-era chunky sneakers) and bags (baguettes, micro-minis, extra-large totes) — and it’s especially true for jeans. In fact, the best denim trends for fall and winter 2022 aren’t the same straight-leg styles that we’ve seen in recent years — and some of them aren’t pants at all. Instead, now that we’re easing into going out again, denim vests, midi and maxi skirts, oversized jackets and low-slung, baggy jeans are at the top of my wishlist.
The late ’90s and early aughts may have been a more controversial time for fashion, but it’s possible to get in on these denim trends without feeling like you need to pair them with a baby tee and questionable boy band-heavy playlist. It may have been months — or even years — since you’ve slid into a pair of jeans, but rest assured: These are chic enough to convince you to put away your sweats. Ahead are five denim trends to try this cold-weather season, plus the best styles to shop.
Baggy, ‘90s-Era Low-Rise Jeans
What’s probably the most popular of all the denim trends? Baggy, 90s-era jeans worn low on the hips are this season’s top sellers for tons of brands. Pair them with a slouchy knit sweater and lug sole boots for a casual look, or an oversized blazer and kitten heels for the ultimate stylish throwback fit for a night out.
EB Denim Cargo Pants, $498
Utilitarian Cargo Jeans
Utilitarian-forward clothing has seeped into our closets by way of cargo shorts and pants — and now, the pocket-heavy styles have officially hit our jeans. I particularly love the juxtaposition of baggy, tomboy-era pants with a sparkly or otherwise super-feminine top.
Zara TRF Belted Cargo Jeans, $59.90
Confession: I haven’t actually worn a denim vest just yet, but my friend Raeann inspired me to buy a vintage version a few weeks back. I’ve just been awaiting the occasion, which, it turns out, is not jury duty. Sub your shirt for a vest and pair it with trousers, or wear it open over a slim-fit turtleneck.
Dynamite Denim Vest, $59.95
We The Free Denim Florence Ranch Vest, $39.95 (Orig. $98)
ba&sh Ruben Vest, $290
Denim Midi/Maxi Skirts
If I could wear any single thing when I leave my house for the rest of eternity, it would be this skirt. I’ve reached for this front-slit denim midi skirt from AG Jeans more times than I can count and even went so far as to track down a black version and a full maxi version. I wore mine with tall boots and a flowy top, but it’s just as chic with sneakers or brogues.
AG Jeans Haruko Skirt, $198
Rag & Bone Marlowe Denim Skirt, $138 (Orig. $275)
Oversized Denim Jackets
An oversized denim jacket is always a staple, but if blue denim feels like too much, try a white or black denim jacket instead. Treat it like a more casual blazer.
Anine Bing Rory Jacket, $300
Gap Oversized Icon Denim Jacket, $89.95
EB Denim Max Jacket, $325
