Mary Law, who has died aged 91, had two stints playing the anxious guest-house proprietress Mollie Ralston in Agatha Christie’s long-running West End show The Mousetrap; she was also a stalwart of 1950s television, becoming the first British TV actress to go into space – as the science student Janet Campbell in the children’s series The Lost Planet (1954) – and making a fleeting appearance in the hospital soap opera Emergency Ward 10.

March's Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) data arrived hotter than expected and GDP figures point to an economic slowdown. In this environment, economists and investors alike are revisiting the Federal Reserve's rate cut outlook. Stifel Financial Chief Economist Lindsey Piegza joins Yahoo Finance to discuss the prospects for Fed cuts. Piegza notes that although March's PCE did not show "a material increase" in inflation, the Fed had been "expecting a sizable reversal" supporting the disinflationary trend. She suggests that this report could force another adjustment to the Fed's outlook and further delay any near-term rate cuts, with the possibility of rate hikes even coming back into consideration. Regarding consumer behavior, Piegza acknowledges that the consumer remains "very resilient." However, she observes that consumers are becoming more cost-conscious, carefully weighing their spending decisions and seeking value, leading to a slowdown in "broad-based growth." "Without more of a meaningful decline or improvement in inflation, after that minimal concession, I think the Fed's hands are tied, and we'd likely see the Fed move back to the sidelines for a second, extended pause," Piegza tells Yahoo Finance. Daimler Truck must reach a new labor contract with over 7,300 hourly workers at six facilities in the U.S. South by the end of Friday or face a possible strike by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union members. The workers are seeking higher pay, institution of cost-of-living adjustments and greater job security from the heavy-truck maker, UAW President Shawn Fain said during an online speech earlier this week. "Workers' wages at Daimler have not kept up," he said on Tuesday.

The U.S. has determined that an Israeli military unit committed gross human-rights abuses against Palestinians in the West Bank before the war in Gaza began six months ago, but it will hold off on any decision about aid to the battalion while it reviews new information provided by Israel, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson. The undated letter, obtained by The Associated Press on Friday, defers a decision by the U.S. whether to impose a first-ever block on U.S. aid to an Israeli military unit over its treatment of Palestinians. Blinken stressed that U.S. military support for Israel’s defense against Hamas and other threats would not be affected by the State Department's final decision on the one unit.
