35 Must-See Movies Rejected by the Oscars in 2021
The long and winding road to the 93rd Academy Awards is almost over, as the 2021 Oscar winners are set to be revealed this Sunday, April 25. Expected contenders such as “Nomadland,” “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” “Mank,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “Sound of Metal,” and “Minari” all racked up multiple nominations across various above-the-line and craft categories. But what about “The Assistant,” “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” and other awards-worthy titles? As is the case every year with the Oscars, more than a handful of deserving movies were completely rejected by the Academy in 2021. That “First Cow,” “The Invisible Man,” “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” and “His House” have zero Oscar nominations among them is a bitter pill that will remain hard to swallow for some time.
Fortunately, the following 25-plus movies are in good company. In recent years, the Academy has omitted great films such as “Uncut Gems,” “The Farewell,” and “Midsommar” from the Oscar race, which means many of these films will continue to have a great shelf life even without Oscar noms under their belts.
