3 Sacramento City Council races are heading to runoffs in the November election

The verdict on three open Sacramento City Council seats won’t come in until November.

Final results from Sacramento County’s June primary election showed no City Council candidate in a contested race secured enough votes to avoid a runoff in the Nov. 8 general election.

Here’s a look at the fall races.

In the race for District 1, Lisa Kaplan, a longtime Natomas Unified Board Member, received 48% of vote and will face off against realtor Alyssa Lozano. The district covers North Natomas.

In the race for District 3, youth nonprofit leader Michael Lynch will face Sacramento County Board of Education member Karina Talamantes in a contest to represent South Natomas. Talamantes received 49% of the primary vote, while Lynch garnered 40%.

Covering Oak Park and parts of south Sacramento is District 5, which came down to a narrow race between homeless activist Caity Maple, and Active Transportation Commission member Tamiko Heim. Maple received 43% of vote, while Heim with 36%.

Sacramento had an unusual number of open City Council races because of the once-a-decade redistricting process and Councilwoman Angelique Ashby’s decision to run for Senate. As a result, the city will have at least three new council members next year.

The council could have fourth open seat next year if Councilman Eric Guerra is elected to an Assembly seat. He’s running in a district comprised of parts of Sacramento and Elk Grove against Elk Grove Councilwoman Stephanie Nguyen.
