The Lucid Air is no slouch. In Dream Edition Performance trim, it makes an astonishing 1111 hp thanks to two electric motors, allowing for a 0-60 time of 2.5 seconds in pure, silent luxury. The folks at Lucid didn't think that was enough, apparently, because it's just introduced this car: The Lucid Air Sapphire.

Lucid touts the Air Sapphire as the "pinnacle of electric performance," and we can see why. In place of the single rear motor there are now two individual motors, one for each wheel, adding up to a total of three in the car. The extra twist means more power, but Lucid won't reveal how much, saying only that the number is over 1200 horses. It also won't give exact performance claims, but does promise a 0-60 time under two seconds, a standing mile under nine seconds, and a top speed over 200 mph—square at the Tesla Model S Plaid, then.

Straightline speed isn't the only thing that's improved with the Air Sapphire. In order to take advantage of the torque-vectoring capabilities of the rear motors, the suspension has been stiffened, while the ABS, traction control, stability control, and power steering have been retuned. Carbon-ceramic brakes are standard, and come shrouded by staggered 20- and 21-inch Sapphire-specific wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. The wheels also come with removable carbon aero disk covers to squeeze even more range out of the car.

Speaking of range, Lucid hasn't released official EPA-rated numbers for the Air Sapphire. But, like the other upper-echelon Air trims, we expect it to exceed 500 miles per charge.

The Air Sapphire is set to begin production in the first half of 2023 as a limited-production model, According to Lucid. What we don't know is just how many Sapphires it plans to build. If you have $249,000 to blow, you can have one, with order books opening on August 23.
