2023 Emmy Predictions: Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series

The nomination round of voting takes place from June 15 to June 26, with the official Emmy nominations announced Wednesday, July 12. Afterward, final voting commences August 17 and ends the night of August 28. The 75th annual Primetime Emmy Awards will now take place Monday, January 15, live on Fox at 8:00 p.m. ET/ 5:00 p.m. PT.

The State of the Race

It has been a minute since it’s been this hard to pick a frontrunner from the lineup of Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series nominees. In terms of popularity, it would go to “Monster: ​​The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” which broke Netflix streaming records. In terms of populist appeal, the pick would be “Daisy Jones and the Six,” a perfect Prime Video investment that drove sales of the book it adapted, was good enough in the eyes of the TV Academy to earn nine Emmy nominations, and has an original soundtrack that’s had a life of its own on the music charts.

But the most sure bet right now seems to be “Beef,” which serves as a happy medium for what voters look for in a winner here. The Netflix dramedy created by Lee Sung Jin tied “Dahmer” for most recognized limited series, with 13 Emmy nominations, and was as much a critical hit as it was a commercial one. While “Beef” had its own controversy surrounding it, that was not as much a commentary on the actual series as the criticisms of “Dahmer” have been. Evan Peters and Niecy Nash-Betts, the stars of the latter, have a greater Emmys track record, so the prevailing thought is that they will win for giving objectively good performances on a show that ran into a lot of the faults of the true crime genre itself.

FX on Hulu series “Fleishman Is in Trouble” definitely has its passionate fans, and is likely to receive some votes, but it just was not able to reach as wide an audience as its competitors. Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” is kind of the opposite situation, where even though it has been seen by many, it is hard to imagine even the people who enjoyed it referring to the show as their favorite Star Wars series of the season. Sometimes the nomination is enough of an award.
