New near, new beauty products. It’s time to take care of ourselves and have a skin care regimen and makeup routine that will make us feel like our best selves. As a general rule of thumb, change your skin care with the seasons. Set a reminder on your phone for when it’s time to toss your old products, and it’ll keep you on track for a glowing and healthy complexion.

Keep scrolling for the top items you should refresh in your makeup bag every few months.

Mascara

Replace about every three months

Anything that goes near your eye (other than shadow) needs to be replaced every three months. Once the spoolie of a mascara wand touches your eye and goes back into its tube, there are germs you cannot get rid of (don’t Google “lash mites”). But seriously, it’s easier to buy new mascara than worry about your dirty old mascara.

Liquid Eyeliner

Replace about every three months

Similar to mascara, liquid eyeliner directly touches your lid and needs to be replaced every three months. Lucas Dean (@makeupbylucas), a freelance makeup artist in New York City, suggests Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner, linked below.

Lip Gloss

Replace about every six months

If you have a Lancôme Juicy Tube, this rule doesn’t apply to you because you can clean the applicator, and nothing from your mouth directly touches the inside gloss. You’ll want to replace lip glosses similar to Dior’s Plumping Gloss every six months since they’re not possible to clean once you start using them.

Makeup Sponges

Replace about every month

As a golden rule, if you’ve had your makeup sponge for a month, you’ve had it for too long. Makeup sponges can grow bacteria and mold on the inside that you may not be aware of. Egg shape and round sponges are more prone to housing bacteria that can lead to unnecessary breakouts. Real Techniques makes my favorite sponge for under $5.00.

Face or Eye Creams in a Tub

Replace about every six months

A serum or cream with a pump applicator has a longer shelf life than a tub that makes direct contact with your fingertips. Due to constant exposure to the air, products in tubs and open containers can oxidize more quickly, which affects the products’ formulas over time.
