The 2022-23 All-Observer wrestling team

Mallard Creek’s Cam Stinson and Parkwood’s Savannah Bramhall are The Charlotte Observer high school wrestlers of the year

A pair of state championship wrestlers and a state championship coach headline the 2022-23 Charlotte Observer high school wrestling team.

Mallard Creek junior Cameron Stinson is the Charlotte Observer male wrestler of the year. Stinson was 70-0 this season, which ended with him winning the 120-pound state title in 4A.

Stinson, who won the 106-pound, 4A state title as a freshman and the 113-pound state crown as a sophomore, is still unbeaten at 141-0 in his Mavericks’ wrestling career.

Stinson repeats as Charlotte Observer wrestler of the year honor.

Monroe Parkwood senior Savannah Bramhall came into this season with championship expectations after winning state titles in each of her first three high school seasons.

This year, The Observer female wrestler of the year was a perfect 33-0 on her way to a 165-pound state title, the fourth state title of her career.

Bramhall, was also unbeaten as a junior going 25-0, is also only the second athlete in Parkwood school history to win four straight state title in the same event.

Newton Foard’s Mike Carey repeats as The Observer’s coach of the year, after leading Foard’s boys team to its third consecutive 3A state championship, defeating Union Pines 54-24.

The Tigers (37-1 this season) are 140-3 in the past four years, and have been unbeaten in conference play for the past 10 consecutive seasons.

Fred T. Foard also won its fifth state title since 2013.

The Observer changed its coverage area beginning with spring sports coverage. After the winter sports All-Observer teams are named, only athletes in the new coverage zone will be considered for inclusion for future teams. The revised coverage area includes schools in counties that touch Mecklenburg: Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln and Union.

106: George Coleman, Fred T. Foard, So.: The Tigers’ sophomore was the 3A state runner-up going 47-6 this season.

113: Trevor Freeman, A.L. Brown, Jr.: The Wonders’ junior won the 4A state championship with a 49-6 record.

120: Cameron Stinson, Mallard Creek, Jr.: The Mavericks’ junior went a perfect 70-0 on his way to his third straight 4A state title.

126: Charleston Baglio, Central Cabarrus, Jr./Cooper Davis, Cox Mill, Jr.: Baglio was the 3A state runner-up going 46-2; Davis was the 4A state champion with a 49-2 record.

132: Charlie Sly, Stuart Cramer, Sr.: The Storm senior finished his high school career with a 3A state title going 53-2 overall.

138: Bray Trivette, North Iredell, So.: The Raiders’ sophomore went a perfect 46-0 on his way to the 3A state championship.

145: Brock Carey, Fred T. Foard, Sr.: The Davidson College commit also finished a perfect 56-0 season with a 3A state title.

152: Davis Freeze, Mooresville, Sr./Brayden Mejia, Fred T. Foard, Jr.: Freeze won the 4A state championship going 42-1; Mejia was the 3A state champion going 44-1.

160: Matt Karagias, Stuart Cramer, Sr.: The Storm senior was the 3A state champion with a 49-2 record.

170: Greg Merriman, Mooresville, Sr./Zane Birtchet, Fred T. Foard, Sr.: Merriman went 42-1 on his way to a 4A state title; Birtchet was the 3A state champion going 48-2.

182: Mason Avery, West Lincoln, Sr.: The 2A state champion was 44-2.

195: Tomas Booker, Hickory Ridge, Sr./Dylan Smith, Fred T. Foard, Sr.: Booker, an Appalachian State commit, won the 4A state title going 58-0 this season; Smith, a Davidson College commit, was also a perfect 54-0 on the way to the 3A state championship.

220: Edison Flores, North Iredell, Sr.: The Raiders’ senior capped his high school career with a perfect 50-0 record and a 3A state title.

285: Nathan Carnes, Porter Ridge, Sr./Christian Hercules, West Rowan, Sr./D.J. Spring, Maiden, Sr.: Carnes went 51-1 on his way to the 4A state title; Hercules was 47-1 and the 3A state champion; Spring finished 30-1, capping his season with a 2A state championship.

107: Omarzia Wright, West Caldwell, Jr.: The Warriors’ junior won a state title while going 27-13 on the season.

114: Leah Edwards, East Rowan, So.: The Mustangs’ sophomore wrestled to a state title, going 42-2 overall this season.

120: Laura Ruiz-Diaz, Providence, Sr.: The Panthers’ senior went 14-4 this season, capping it with a fourth-place finish at the state championships.

132: Brianna DeLeon, Weddington, So.: The Warriors’ sophomore went a perfect 20-0 on her way to a state championship.

138: Sarem Desalegn, Mallard Creek, Jr.: The Mavericks’ junior went 26-9 this season, finishing it with a fourth-place finish at the state championships.

145: Caleigh Suddreth, Lake Norman, Jr./Caden Collett, Northwest Cabarrus, Sr.: Suddreth went 16-1 on her way to a state title; Collett was 27-12, finishing fourth at the state championships.

152: Navaeh Banks, Lake Norman, Sr.: The Wildcats’ senior was state runner-up going 18-4 this season.

165: Savannah Bramhall, Parkwood, Sr.: The Wolfpack senior won her fourth straight state title, going a perfect 33-0 in her final high school season.

235: Jillian Boothe, Mallard Creek, Sr.: The Mavericks’ senior finished fourth at the state championships to cap a 23-4 season.
