On this day in 1992, Manon Rhéaume became the first woman to play NHL hockey
Manon Rhéaume was a goaltender for the Canadian women's hockey team. But today we recognize her for a feat accomplished by no other woman: playing in the NHL.
On this day in 1992, Rhéaume suited up for the Tampa Bay Lightning in a preseason game, allowing two goals in her one period of action against the St. Louis Blues, making her the first and only woman to play for an NHL team. She tried out for the Boston Bruins in 1993 and appeared in another exhibition game.
She's also a two-time gold medalist in the IIHF Women's World Championship and a silver Olympic medalist. On the anniversary of her historic day, click through the gallery above to see iconic shots of women throughout hockey history. Also be sure to watch the video below to see why one goalie got ejected -- you've probably never seen anyone else try it on the ice.
