Read this before you upgrade your devices to iOS 9

Some big changes are coming to your Apple devices with the new iOS9. The operating system will be available to the general public starting Wednesday, September 16, but make sure you do your research before hitting that upgrade button.

The latest iOS has already been available in beta version to some individuals, but it's now ready to make its appearance on everybody's iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. iOS 9 seems to bring great improvements, especially if you were having trouble running iOS 8 on older devices like the iPad Mini or the iPhone 4s. Any device prior to that won't be able to support the new operative system.

One of the features that has gotten many users very excited is the much awaited multitasking mode that lets you visualize more than one app at the same time open on your screen. Other things that Apple has caught up on are improvements that bring public transport to maps, though The Guardian claims that, when their team reviewed the beta version, directions and arrivals are not nearly as accurate as on Google Maps.

Overall, the new updates are very appealing and if you can't wait to get your hands on iOS 9 you should make sure to follow a few simple steps before you jump to the new release.

First of all, do consider that like in every launch the software initially presents some bugs, so you might want to wait some time before you blindly upgrade to see what other people say about it.

Secondly, backup your data before wiping the old system. You can either back it up via iCloud or iTunes. Either one is a life-saver if anything goes wrong with the update. Open the Settings, select iCloud and tap on Backup > Back Up Now. If you don't have enough space in the cloud, just plug your device into your computer and use the good old iTunes.

Once your backup is stored somewhere you can finally end the wait and upgrade your phone.
