2 NorCal school districts offer higher pay for substitute teachers, addressing shortage

In an attempt to address staffing shortages, two Northern California school districts are offering increased pay for substitute teachers. The rates are at least $30 more a day. The market for both the Elk Grove Unified and Lodi Unified school districts is competitive, but both are dealing with a lack of substitute teachers, an issue stemming from before the COVID-19 pandemic. Xanthi Soriano, director of communications for EGUSD, said the school district has been dealing with lower staffing levels for about two years. EGUSD's substitute teacher staffing pool sits at around 300 teachers, and the school district is hoping to get 500 more.
