16-year-old in pickup truck tried to blow exhaust smoke on cyclists, then struck them, witness says

A 16-year-old is being investigated after striking six cyclists in his pickup near Waller, Texas.

Fox 26 reported four out of the six cyclists were taken to the hospital Saturday morning, including two by helicopter after the teen tried to blow exhaust smoke into their lane.

The cyclists were training for IRONMAN Texas, a long-distance triathlon, and were 75 miles into their ride when a black diesel truck pulled up close to them, Chase Ferrell, a cyclist in the group, told Fox 26.

Ferrell said the truck slowed, then accelerated to blow exhaust smoke at the cyclists. When the driver tried to do the same thing to cyclists ahead of Ferrell, he struck them.

"It wasn’t like he was on his phone," Ferrell told Fox 26. "(He) definitely meant to try and scare these people (or) intimidate them in some way. (Maybe he then) made a mistake and ran them over."

Two cyclists refused medical treatment, and one was being treated for head trauma, according to ABC 13.

A representative for the Waller Police Department told USA TODAY that the teen had not been arrested, but officials were investigating.

"Right now is prime time for cyclists and people to be outside working out," Ferrell told FOX 26. "Please, be careful."
