A 15-year-old freshman died at his high school’s evening track and field practice, according to an Indiana school district.

“The Metropolitan School District of Lawrence Township and Lawrence North High School are extremely saddened by the sudden and unexpected death of a 15-year old freshman student ... at Track & Field practice,” a district spokesperson said. “Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, friends, teachers, and classmates.”

The district spokesperson told McClatchy News he died at practice Monday, May 23. The student was not publicly identified and a cause of death has not been released.

Emergency Medical Services and police were called to the practice for a cardiac arrest prior to the student’s death, according to records obtained by WXIN.
