14-year-old killed in camper fire, Tennessee officials say. ‘She was a beautiful soul’

A Tennessee high school is mourning the loss of a ninth-grade student who officials say was killed in a fire.

Gracie McBryant, 14, died Saturday, Oct. 1, after a camper at a home in Bristol caught fire just before 6 a.m., a spokesperson for the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office told WJHL.

The fire is believed to have been accidental, the Kingsport Times News reported, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating. Officials had not released additional information as of the morning of Sunday, Oct. 2.

West Ridge High School, where Gracie was a student and member of the school band, said it is “heartbroken.”

“She was a beautiful soul with a radiant energy about her,” the school wrote about Gracie on Facebook.

Gracie played the clarinet and was a “standout member” of the band, the West Ridge Band wrote on Facebook. She was “loved by her classmates, her teachers, her principals, and the entire West Ridge High School staff.”

The teen was also known for wearing blue eye shadow and highlighter on her eyes, the school said.

“So, for Gracie, our band members will be wearing blue highlighter/eye shadow on our eyes for the duration of next week,” the school said, adding that members will also be collecting donations for her family at the school.

The school said it will have “mental health professionals and pastoral care” available to students and staff on Monday, Oct. 3.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family,” the school wrote. “Gracie Alyssa McBryant. We love you. May you Rest In Peace.”

Bristol is about 110 miles northeast of Knoxville.
