Here are 10 scenic SC RV parks to try Memorial Day weekend 2022, according to trip planner

If you’re on social media even just a little bit you’re likely to see people raving about living in an RV.

Consider that the hashtag #vanlife has been used around 6 million times on Instagram. About 1 million Americans live in recreational vehicles full-time and 11% of households own one, driven (pun intended) by Millennials, who own 38% of the vehicles in the U.S.

And, to cater to this clientele are 16,000 campgrounds and parking facilities around the country. South Carolina has hundreds. And they’ll be ready for a relaxing Memorial Day weekend for you and your family.

RV Life, a trip planning application, has all sorts of recommendations about all sorts of places to go and things to do.

Among them, is a list of the most scenic places to park your RV in South Carolina. Most are along the coast, but there are a few surprises in their list.

No. 1 is a likely suspect, Hilton Head Harbor RV Resort and Marina, which they describe as luxurious and amazing. 200 sites. Concrete pads. Landscaped. 30/50 amp hookups. And get this, free WiFi and cable television, but why do you want to do that when you can jet ski, kayak, go on a dolphin tour, swim in one of two swimming pools (one with a waterslide), sit in a hot tub and a saunas. And eat in a five-star restaurant.

Here’s one of the surprises. No 2 is in Hardeeville, east of Hilton Head. Camp Lake Jasper RV Resort has nature spilling out across a 320-acre nature preserve next door. Hiking trails, stocked fishing lakes, elevated boardwalk, pool, canoes and kayaks for rent. Full hook-ups, and again complimentary WiFi and cable television, picnic tables and fire rings. And perhaps most charming of all, horseshoe pits.

No. 3, Hunting Island State Park — 100 campsites, beach walkways, a fishing pier and playground. Hunting Island lighthouse is a draw, 130 feet tall with an amazing view of the ocean and forest. There’s also a nature center and a saltwater lagoon to swim in.

A walk in the woods: Edisto Beach State Park has nearly five miles of trails that provide easy walking along sandy paths beneath a canopy filled with songbirds and sunlight.

No 4. Edisto Beach State Park and 1,200 acres, two campgrounds, one with ocean views, the other in the maritime forest. Hiking, biking are among the greatest hits. There’s an education center highlighting the history of the region, including its Native American heritage.

No. 5. James Island County Park — 120 sites along the Stono River marsh. Walk, bike on paved paths, saltwater fishing, crabbing, sand volleyball, horseshoes climbing wall and an 18-hole disc golf course.

No. 6 Mount Pleasant KOA — 400 acres just across the Ravenel Bridge from Charleston and on the grounds of the Oakland Plantation. Private fishing lake, 1.5-mile nature trail, wagon rides, pool, horseshoes, disc golf and that ever-lovin’ game cornhole. Wi-Fi, cable television, can’t get away from it.

No. 7 is a short jaunt from Columbia, It’s the 35–acre, three island Dreher Island State Recreation Area that RV Life calls a “fisherman’s paradise.” Can we say 12 miles of shoreline on Lake Murray and striped bass, largemouth bass, crappie, bream and catfish? Three live wells/catch and release tanks are provided, as is boat access to the lake. In all, 97 paved RV campsites as well as tent sites and five lakeside villas, trails, playgrounds, picnic shelters..

Moving on into the Upstate, RVLife is calling Devils Fork State Park No. 8. Located in Salem along Lake Jocassee, the park covers 7,500 acres with 57 RV sites. Boating is big (four waterfalls can only be seen from the water) as is fishing that some say is the best trout fishing in the state. A lake so clear you can usually see 20 to 50 feet. Perhaps surprisingly the lake gets to 73 and 80 degrees in the summer but winter temps drop to between 44 and 56.

No. 9 is Lake Greenwood Motorcoach Resort, which RV Life calls “one of the most peaceful locations in the Southeast.” Swimming, boating, and crappie and trout fishing, 87 lots on 12 acres, heated swimming pool and spa, outdoor kitchen, and clubhouse with two fireplaces. One unique thing RVLife points out about this resort is “spectacular sunrises and sunsets.”

No. 10 is Cheraw State Park, 17 RV sites and nine cabins, 7,000 acres of pine forest and cypress wetlands and home to the endangered Red Cockaded woodpecker. The park is near the 360-acre Lake Juniper. Stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hiking, biking trails, picnic areas and a Tom Jackson-designed 18-hole golf course.
