In “Ordinary People” (1980), Mary Tyler Moore steps away from type playing a cold and bitter woman unwilling to conceal her disdain for her younger son who survives an accident that claims his older brother. Sadly, Moore lost her own son to a gun accident shortly before filming began, a loss that no doubt fed the intensity of her role. Millions of television viewers knew Moore first as Laura Petrie, from “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and then as Mary Richards in “The Mary Tyler Moore Show.” Moore buries all remnants of those affable personas to conjure up someone so riddled with grief and denial that her very presence on screen seems toxic. But despite being the best part of “Ordinary People,” she lost the Best Actress award to Sissy Spacek for “Coal Miner’s Daughter” (1980).
