8 best texturising hair sprays for voluminous and tousled locks
Texturising hair sprays add instant shape to tons of different hairstyles – all without damaging those precious ends – making it one of the easiest tricks in the book to boost volume when you’re short on time.
A quick spritz can lift up a newly acquired bob, impart beachy, cascading waves to once shapeless lengths and add texture to a previously poker-straight ponytail.
Better yet, the majority of texturising hair sprays don’t stop at styling your hair either – they’ll actually care for it too. From shine-enhancing to strengthening formulas, they come loaded with ingredients your hair will love.
Since no two sprays are the same, it can be tricky to know which formula is right for you. So, we’ve rounded up the very best new and cult formulas to try this winter, so you can spritz, spray and be ready in seconds.
How we tested
We tested eight texturising hair sprays on straight, coloured and damaged hair. Aside from testing the longevity of each, we were also checking everything from the feel of the spray in our hair (no crunch, brittleness or dryness in this line-up) and the overall finish. We even tested to see if they improved our hair after a few weeks of use. Spoiler: some actually did.

Living Proof dry volume blast, 238ml
Best: Overall
Living Proof has long been famed for its cult dry shampoo, but we think this dry volume blast also deserves a moment in the spotlight. A weightless spray that’s big on volume, we found it perfect for giving our flat, poker-straight hair an instant boost. Not only is it super easy to use (simply spray at parted sections at the roots for an instant lift) but we found it gave similar results to a pro blow-dry. Plus, no chalkiness or dryness whatsoever.

Moroccanoil volumising mist, 160ml
Best: For volume
Moroccanoil’s new volumising mist harnesses the brand’s most-loved ingredient argan oil to help moisturise dry and brittle hair. Not only did it give us healthy-looking, volumised locks from root to tip, but we also found that the mist left our hair feeling a lot softer than standard texturising sprays – thanks to nourishing ingredients like rice amino acids. While we wouldn’t claim the volume lasts 72 hours, it did hold its own throughout a busy day running around in London.

Hair By Sam McKnight cool girl barely there texture mist, 250ml
Best: For texture
Thought up by legendary hairdresser Sam Mcknight, it’s safe to say that this formula is one-of-a-kind. Lighter than your average mist, we found this product great for creating loose texture and our straight hair even gained a slight wave too. Better yet, the formula didn’t weigh down our hair and added definition without feeling too heavy.

Oribe dry texturising spray, 75ml
Best: Multi-tasker
What did we love most about this formula? It offered volume, haircare and a dry shampoo all in one go. Containing patented polymers that absorb oil at the roots, it made our three-day hair look almost brand new. Plus, it’s loaded with natural ingredients like Kiwi and passion flower extracts which helped our hair look and feel more moisturised. A winner for anyone with dry ends.

Ouai texturising hair spray, 130g
Best: For beachy waves
No hairspray round-up is complete without at least mentioning the famed Ouai texturising hair spray. Making the quest for undone waves a whole lot easier, this dry shampoo and texturising hairspray helped us create beachy volume and refreshed days-old tresses with ease. We loved that the formula is completely invisible meaning you don’t get any chalkiness or residue when using it, too. Although it is currently out of stock in the 130g size, you can still sign up to be notified when it returns, or alternatively, try the spray in the the 40g size (£12, Cultbeauty.co.uk).

Color Wow style on steroids performance enhancing texture spray, 262ml
Best: For colour care
This texturising spray is perfect for anyone who regularly gets their highlights done. Another invisible finish, it added volume to our long lengths but without fading our colour-treated locks in the slightest. We also think it had the best hold out of all the texturising sprays we tested. Plus, our hair felt soft and bouncy throughout the day.

Philip Kingsley maximizer root volumising spray, 125ml
Best: For shine
For a great texturising spray on a budget, this formula ticked a lot of boxes for us. We found it super easy to use (by simply spraying directly onto our roots and shaking our hair out) and loved the added shine and softness it gave our locks. A big bonus: it also tamed our flyaways while still adding lots of volume. Win, win, win!

Virtue texturising spray, 140g
Best: For hair care
A game changer in the world of haircare, every single one of Virtue’s formulas harnesses the power of protein alpha keratin 60ku to help bind and protect strands. We found this a winner for tending to our damaged hair and loved that the formula actually strengthens your ends in the long run. In fact, we loved it so much that it has now become a staple in our bathroom cabinet.
