Norway's central bank is now raising rates more quickly than it had planned in June in order to avoid a longer period of high inflation, Norges Bank Governor Ida Wolden Bache said on Thursday. The central bank earlier raised its benchmark interest rate by 50 basis points (bps), twice the amount flagged in June, lifting it to 1.75%, the highest level in a decade. "That would have made it more difficult to bring inflation down and could have required a sharper tightening of monetary policy somewhat further out, increasing the risk of an economic downturn," she said.

Russian anti-war activists in Cyprus have vowed to continue holding protests against the invasion of Ukraine despite, they say, becoming the target of a threat after their faces appeared on a billboard site draped in black ribbons. The pictures of nine activists appeared in late July on the seafront in Limassol, a city popular with both Russians and Ukrainians and where anti-war demonstrators regularly gather. All nine had participated in protests that regularly take place in the city, which draw crowds ranging from dozens to hundreds.
BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Thursday that Germany will temporarily lower taxes on natural gas to ease the financial pressure on people struggling with soaring energy costs fueled by Russia's war in Ukraine. The announcement at a hastily convened news conference in Berlin comes a day after Scholz met with hostile protests during a town hall event outside the capital. Scholz said his government had decided to lower the value-added tax on gas from 19% to 7% until the end of March 2024

Trading house Sumitomo Corp expects Japanese aluminium premiums to remain at between $125 and $175 a tonne next year, against $148 this quarter, although changes in Russian supply could be a swing factor, a company manager said on Thursday. Japan is Asia's biggest aluminium importer and the premiums it agrees to pay over the London Metal Exchange (LME) cash price each quarter for primary metal shipments set the benchmark for the region. Japan's premiums for the July-September quarter were $148 a tonne, down from $172 in April-June and $177 in January-March, reflecting weak demand for automobiles and rising local inventory.
Turkey's central bank shocked markets on Thursday by cutting its policy rate by 100 basis points to 13%, saying it needed to keep driving economic growth despite inflation surging to near 80% and a global tightening trend among its peers. Turkish lira dropped 1% after the policy easing, which no economist had predicted in a Reuters poll given there was virtually no signal it was coming. The bank had held its policy rate at 14% for the past seven months after cutting by 500 basis points toward the end of last year, a series of cuts that set off a historic currency crisis and sent inflation soaring to 24-year highs.
