1 dead, 2 seriously injured in head-on crash involving Yuba City driver on Highway 99

One person was killed and two others seriously injured after a car collided head-on with a semi-truck Sunday morning on Highway 99 in Butte County.

A black Nissan Sentra driven by a 23-year-old Yuba City man was traveling southbound on Highway 99 near Evans Reimer Road around 6:45 a.m. when it veered into the northbound lane “for an unknown reason” and into the path of an oncoming semi-truck, the California Highway Patrol’s Oroville office said in a news release.

The driver of the semi attempted to avoid the sedan but was unable, and the two vehicles collided head-on, authorities said.

A 23-year-old passenger inside the Nissan suffered fatal injuries, and the driver and another passenger suffered “major” injuries, CHP officials said. The semi driver was not hurt.

The crash, which happened just south of Gridley, remains under investigation.

None of the involved parties have been identified.

It was the second deadly head-on crash on Highway 99 in Northern California in three days. Elk Grove Police Officer Tyler Lenehan died Friday morning after a suspected DUI driver traveling the wrong way on southbound Highway 99 near 47th Avenue in Sacramento collided with the motorcycle officer, who was heading into work.
