Free lunches to end for some at CMS+ Dad dies after allegedly exchanging gunfire with cops

Happy Tuesday! It’s Sydney Bergan.

If you’re looking for a way to spend your Independence Day, Krispy Kreme may have exactly what you need. The Charlotte-based doughnut chain announced that anyone who wears red, white and blue to their stores June 27 - July 4 will get a free doughnut of their choice.

There’s no Krispy Kreme in my home city of Boston, so I personally may have to take a trip down to Charlotte just for that. Now that I’m craving doughnuts, here’s your news this afternoon.

1. Free lunch for some Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students ends this week despite new law

Last week Congress approved the $3 billion Keep Kids Fed Act to offset rising food costs and phase out of the federal program created during the pandemic to give all students free breakfast and lunch.

For Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools this means an end to universal free lunch, as all schools will only be able to provide cost-free breakfast to students during the 2022-2023 school year.

CMS spokeswoman Cassie Fambro said families will have to qualify for free or reduced lunch by filling out an application. Applications will be available to complete online or on paper Aug. 1.

As of April 1, 2019, 48.6% of CMS students were on free or reduced lunch.

“Students not approved for free lunch will need to have cash or money on account to pay for lunch,” Fambro said.

Kevin Boston was at Food Lion buying food for his children Sunday afternoon when police say he robbed the store and later shot a gun at officers, who returned fire and struck him.

Members of Boston’s family said that they weren’t notified of his death by police at a news conference at Marshall Park on Monday. A CMPD spokesperson told The Charlotte Observer that the department notified the family on Sunday.

Affectionately known as “KK” by his family, Boston was a single father of three children, ages 13, 14 and 18. Mario Black, his cousin, and Billie Black, Boston’s sister-in-law, say he was a family man.

There’s nothing quite like a slushified rosé on a summer day. Luckily, Charleston-based restaurant Co-Op Frosé and Eatery, is coming to Charlotte’s South End neighborhood in July.

Now you may be asking … What is frosé? The alcoholic beverage is made by mixing together rosé and ice for an adults-only slushy.

The restaurant also serves gourmet sandwiches and salads in addition to coffee and breakfast.
